Passenger plane crashes in Iran, almost 50 dead: reports

TEHRAN - A civilian airliner crashed on take-off in a residential area near Tehran's Mehrabad airport on Sunday, Iranian news agencies said, with reports that almost 50 people were killed.

The plane was headed to the eastern city of Tabas, the IRNA and Fars news agencies said, and crashed at 9.18 am (0448 GMT).

The official IRINN television channel said the plane crashed in the Azadi neighbourhood, west of the airport, but did not state if fatalities were confined to passengers or if people were also killed on the ground.

"All the passengers are dead," a fire service spokesman said on IRNA. A second unnamed official said 48 people were on board the turboprop Antonov An-140 aircraft when it crashed.

There were conflicting accounts of the airline that the plane belonged to, with one report saying it was a Taban Airlines aircraft while another said it was owned by Sepahan Airlines.

Mehrabad is near central Tehran and is Iran’s main domestic hub and by far the busiest of the country’s airports, serving routes to all Iranian cities.

Most international flights take off from Tehran Imam Khomeini International Airport, which is located further west of the Iranian capital.

48 persons on board (40 pax + 8 crew), understand it came down in a built up area so there maybe casualties on the ground.

An Antonov AN-140 kit built in Iran, Iran has had more than it's fair share of plane crashes blamed on it poorly maintained ageing fleet of aircraft hit hard by ban on export of plane parts to Iran.

The IrAn-140 is a twin-engine turboprop plane based on Ukrainian technology that is assembled under license in Iran. It is a version of the Antonov An-140 regional plane and can carry up to 52 passengers.

That is a bit of a stretch. The stratosphere begins at roughly 35,000 feet, I doubt this small plane was flying anywhere close to that altitude Where did you get the radiation idea from?  I am more inclined to say mechanical failure due to maintenance neglect  No Mater  RIP lost loved ones

Its sad but this is now going to be a trend, Radiation in the stratosphere affects airplanes electronics.

Crash of Iranian Built Plane Leaves 39 Dead

A locally built Iranian passenger plane crashed shortly after takeoff in Tehran on Sunday, killing 39 people and reviving questions about the safety of a cash-strapped aviation sector left hobbled by international sanctions.

President Hassan Rouhani offered his condolences to victims' families and quickly ordered an investigation into the crash. Similar planes operated by Iranian carriers will be grounded until the probe is complete, he directed.

The plane was based on a relatively obscure Ukrainian design that has been involved in previous Iranian air disasters.

The Sepahan Air regional airliner, bound for the eastern town of Tabas, went down in a residential area shortly after takeoff at 9:20 a.m. from Tehran's Mehrabad airport.

State TV said the plane's tail struck the cables of an electricity tower before it hit the ground and burst into flames. The official IRNA news agency said the plane suffered an engine failure. Whatever the ultimate cause, quick thinking by the pilot may have saved some lives.

"We should be thankful to God that the pilot did all he could to steer the plane away from residential buildings and fortunately did not crash into them. Otherwise, we would have been dealing with a much worse crisis," said Jalal Maleki, spokesman of Tehran's Fire Department.

Iran airliner crash kills 39 in Tehran street, injures 9

(AFP) / 11 August 2014

President Hasan Rohani ordered the grounding of all domestically produced An-140s, asks for a complete report from transport ministry.

An Iranian passenger plane crashed on Sunday moments after takeoff from Tehran, killing 39 people on board and narrowly avoiding many more deaths when it plummeted near a busy market.

The plane was headed to the eastern city of Tabas, the IRNA and Fars news agencies said, when it crashed at 9.18am (0448 GMT), after leaving Mehrabad airport.

It triggered a fireball when it smashed into the capital’s Azadi neighbourhood, close to where hundreds of military families live, and only a few hundred metres from a row of shops.

Iran’s deputy transport minister Ahmad Majidi said the Antonov An-140 turboprop plane had 40 passengers, including six children, and eight crew on board.

The accident killed 39 people and injured nine, according to the latest official toll. A fire official initially said all on board had been killed.

The aircraft was operated by Sepahan Airlines, and a tail section bearing the company’s dolphin logo could be seen sticking out of the road as security forces cordoned off the crash site where firefighters had doused the flames.

Black smoke billowed from the mass of burnt out and twisted metal, with officials saying the plane hit a wall and trees.

“The scene was terrible, with the back of the plane in the middle of the street,” one witness said.

“But we were lucky because there was a market 500 metres away and a lot of people were there.”

Get yer tin foil hat out lad.

I don't recall any aircraft being brought down by radiation in the stratosphere. Can you name one?

May we evade air travel in 2014 if possible, look forward to a better 2015.

I understand, but here there is no safe way to travel around, and if you really need to travel then you have to take your pick and keep your fingers crossed !
