Hi all. I'm here on Samui checking out options for a long-term stay. Headed for Phangan in the next few days and wondering whether I can get DSL on or near beaches like Tien?

Or maybe there are guesthouses there with a wireless access point.

Hate to bother with high-tech in paradise, but I need it for w*rk.

Many thanks.

If you are talking about Had tien on the east side up the coast from Hadrin they do not have telephones much less DSL. Only thing there would be mobile gprs.

The western Had Tien is too far from Thong Sala for DSL, I believe.

The only reliable DSL is in Thong Sala or Hadrin and perhaps Thong Nai Pan.

We have DSL in Ban Kai but because the Tessabahn used the same poles for the street lights our DSL cuts out at 6:30 pm when the street lights come on. (Nearby electrical signals interefere with the DSL). I imagine anything past the high school in Ban Tai would have the same problem.

In addition to SBK's post:

Nomore adsl connections are available from TOT until 2007 (unless somebody ends his/her connection).

The engineers told me that TOT will not invest in new equipment on Samui for the rest of the year (which is required for additional lines)

Thanks for the replies. I'm at Hat Tien (southeastern side of the island now). There is no dsl, but there is wi-fi, but it's expesive: 2 baht/minute.

Sounds like the normal tourist price.....

Who's providing WiFi? And can you apply for a monthly rate?

It's provided by Ichiwawa. They sell different durations, the longest (according the manager of the Sanctuary, where I was staying) is 1,000 minutes for 2,000 baht. Don't know if there is a better rate available. I also learned from some Ichiwawa users there that coverage is spotty in the Hat Tien area.
