When boredom starts to rule the day

Regarding Spain, obviously some of you haven't been there recently because I find Thailand at least on a par now.

Eating out in Spain is cheap as frites even in the resort areas.

Bottles of good quality wine for EUR 2, beers for 50c in supermarket, I paid no more than EUR 2 for beers on a night out in Malaga. Hell even Madrid and BCN are cheap!

You can buy property with proper freehold rights for next to nothing now.

Spanish people by enlarge are honest and lovely. Most Thai people are just after your money. Also it's easier to have local friends in Spain as you share western culture. Spanish is much easier to learn.

Oh and you can ski too.

But it is much cheaper than a lot of you remember, although I guess many of you can't even remember last night!

I lived in Spain for 20 years ( Canary Islands ) When i went to live there in 1991 things were very cheap with the peseta but when the Euros came in things became rather expensive over night.Properties became expensive and then a few years ago it crashed leaving loads of bargains to be found everywhere! The supermarkets in Spain & the canary islands seem to be more expensive than the UK but many things in the supermarkets in the UK are the same price as Thailand. What i loved in Spain was the cheap wine, salami, olives and cheese - all of these of course are " bloody expensive in Thailand ". But the are many things in Thailand which are ridiculously cheap! My rental on a small studio apartment in Naklua costs just 2000 baht a month in rent ( 50 euros) inc wifi & sat tv The same thing in the Canaries would cost 500 euros a month! You can buy a second hand studio apartment with pool here in Pattaya for 500,000 baht (12,000 euros) The same thing in the canaries would cost 60,000 euros !!! I have just eaten a delicious " Chicken Panang Curry " for 20 baht ( 5 baht extra for the rice! ) from the local market. In the Canaries we used to eat " Menu del dia " in most spanish bars a 3 course meal with wine or beer for 6 euros inc.If the property prices and rentals go up drastically in Thailand then it will end up being the same price as europe! and then it's time to move on to pastures new ................Farang Jaidee wub.png

I think you'll find that Mainland Spain and The Canaries are different animals altogether. I found Tenerife quite expensive compared to somewhere like Seville for instance.

Buying property in Thailand is way too risky, I know there are some issues with land ownership in certain areas of Spain but this is the exception not the norm.

You'd be surprised what you could rent in Spain with little money!

I think it's possible to live cheaply in many places and hard to compare like for like but I do agree one thing, that is Thailand will become even more expensive as wages here rise while many parts of Southern Europe are going the other way.

Agree with you 1000%. canaryson did live in the Canaries and stated it was expensive recently,I found it so-so compared to Thailand.

Mainland Spain is a diff animal,so damned cheap ,renting buying I wonder at times why I am still here, but it is baggage you collect over the years that add up,hard to cast adrift

Am going over again soon, take a look at Portugal as well

Cheers j8k breath of fresh air can speak sp too (well used to)

" Romantic Baggage " ..????

I have also found that Thailand is probably the worst place in the world for finding Spanish people to talk to! Because i don't want to forget my Spanish, every time i hear someone Spanish talking outside in the street (which isn't very often) i always rush over and join in the conversation! I met a Cuban man the other day who was " delighted to meet me " ( unlike yourselves viewers....) as we both could speak in Spanish.( it's also rather useful as the Thais don't understand what the hell you are talking about.... ) F.J

We must understand that back in your own country's we have more friends so we dont get bored that quick. Here in Thailand the culture is different and its very easy to get bored here. I use to do the same thing, start drinking in the morning because i was so bored but now i only drink at night.People r quick to judge someone because they start drinking early in the morning. His a drunk because he starts drinking so early and that is not always the truth. I wonder what the Thai's would do all day in western country when they become bored

ever been to Issan, the Thai's wake up and start drinking - even they are bored.

Looking on the bright side, people who wake up in the morning and start drinking are probably not broke.

Nah! romance goes through the window after the first half hour, but I do like getting looked after,my place would look like a bombs hit it after half an hour on my own

It is the GF though, probably a quite a street dogs I look after that keep me anchored. Could take a couple of dogs with me,probably will, the GF a problem though, elderly parents and disabled son that she sends money to up north, been with her for ever, but the lure of Spain gets stronger and stronger

Another joy to behold Marks and Spencer supposedly opening in Central soon, may perk the pecker up for a day or two

Pattaya is still not expensive even on a moderate budget.

Even Joining evening clubs and taking advantage of the weather beaches and good food is far better then what you would face back home.

However the days of living like a king on a pension have long gone

To visit places and do the best activities is expensive so I could see how having only the basics could make you feel bored when tourist next door is blowing 10 k a day

I find on a budget of 1000 thb a day you can live pretty well but need 3000 a day to have the works.

I think that anybody that comes to live in Thailand and spends all day and every day sat in a bar drinking would eventually get completely " bored out of there tree " ( mind you that's probably why they are in the bar in the first place...) There are so many things to do and so cheaply!

Next week i shall be " back on the tracks " taking the train along to various country train stations towards Sattahip and i shall go for a nice long walk in the Country and take a " picnic lunch " with me. (subject to the weather ) The Return train fare from Pattaya is a maximum cost of a cool 12 baht. Can you afford that viewers or would that be too expensive?

Many people living in Thailand just need " a kick up the jaxi " and get motivated! Its a fab way to get out and about for a few hours in the morning in the sunshine but sadly 90 percent of expats living in Pattaya probably wouldn't even know where the Train Station is......

Nothing wrong with starting the day at a bar and BS with friends but the OP could stick with coffee till later on. Many men's lives are defined by their jobs. That's what they do. Then retirement comes and they are like a fish out of water not having the job. I'll be retiring in a few years in Thailand, and am fond of sailing. Finding a proper gym with a good steam room and sauna will be important.

I don 't understand why alcohol should control your life ,even if its cheap here. Wake up to beautiful morning stretch you legs and drink a nice cup of coffee, eat a healthy breakfast and you're ready for the day. So many things to do, so little time. When you're past the 50 , life is counting down to 0 before you know it. Don't waste it in the bars all day even if the girls are there to cheer you up.

I can't believe that anybody who lives here in Thailand would go into a bar just to talk to a lady! ( no way! ) There are just so many lovely Ladies absolutely " everywhere " ( I have just met 5 different ladies in the last hour and i only popped out to Tesco Lotus to buy a " Chicken Salad " ( 30 baht & delicious may i add ) I do admit that i do have a " particular set of skills " viewers ( Not quite the same as Liam Neeson in his new cool Taken 3 movie....) I have had many years as a " highly trained " window canvasser " working for a double glazing company in the UK " meeting and closing " housewives at there front door. 18 seconds or risking having my " large feet " ( perhaps you can admire my honesty viewers..) slammed in the door.

Nearly all the Thai ladies love being approached by " a friendly ting tong farang " (Golden rule : always act a fool at all times and never serious otherwise you will " blow it " )

Apart from the people that like a beer ( kind respect to you all by the way ) but the type of farang that normally will go into a bar to meet ladies are " the shy & reserved type " There is no need to be shy or reserved in Thailand.

Thailand is all a playground .. But can you play the game viewers.....?

To keep it together I never drink before 18:00 and never three day in a row. Too many friends have fallen into the every day drinking habit and gained 40 kg in the process.

Have to be careful !

Once you have been around the block a few times it does get boring, mind the block now has become bigger South Africa,USA,Australia ,PH ,India, last 12 months there again this month hopefully when my bloody passport issue is sorted Oh and Cambodia for visa run this coming week

Drinking? well its socialising, would do it back in the UK. Cinemas here are cheap and can use Pirate Bay freely on the comp, but yes 'fraid life does get boring, that's why now I'm off to the bar see if "the price is right" keep boring thoughts to a minimum for an hour or so

The only deal I will be closing is as " a friend " ( I have absolutely no interest in anything more ) just for the record I don't live my life as a " "Robin Asquith " character ( Confessions of a window cleaner....)

Okay so friends with benefits works. Come on now, you're the one giving the viewers as you say, advice on the ladies.

OK absolutely nothing wrong with " friends with benefits " now I used to know this lady from Bangkok a while back (she was rather active...) I had my life and she had hers. The perfect arrangement! She used to pick me up in this " flash sports car " and wisk me off to this expensive hotel for " more ride than the 4 o'clock at Aintree " ( fabulous ) x

Ever heard of alcoholism? Perhaps not easy to understand if you're not one, but the condition is very real.

Agree ,lovely looking ladies everywhere, everywhere including Tesco. Talking to them in terms of turkin' 'em in Tesco or anywhere else maybe a problem though ,a smack around the chops may well be in order.

That is where a bar comes in handy

In a way I wish I never had read this quote, got me fired up (again).too easy to bury the head in sand ,cement, dust, mud and the rest of it and forget there is another life out there,a permanent one and not a flitting one. No 90 day check ins ,no 12 month visa leash

Have been running things down for a good while now, visa bank deposit etc.,just the awkward bit is the GF ,but arm her with a return tix probably will be something of a reassurance

Trip down to the amphur, then Sp embassy do the paperwork, then adios amigo
