KOH SAMUI: -- On the 20th of August the police in Koh Samui received reports that a man armed with a knife had stabbed another man to death in a trinket shop in Chaweng.

Tourists looked in horror as the attack played out in front of their eyes just a few doors down from the popular Nori Indian restaurant at around 8-30pm.

The victim of the stabbing is said to be a Burmese shop assistant aged 30, the attacker a 48 year old Burmese man who is thought to work as an electrician in the Chaweng area.

Witnesses told the police that the men had been arguing and as the argument heated up the older man pulled out a knife and stabbed the younger man in the area of his left nipple. After some struggle the younger man died.

The attacker then attempted run from the scene but on lookers including tourists apprehended the man who was later taken into police custody where he confessed to attacking his younger brother first with a bottle and then fatally with a knife over an argument about the younger man flirting.

So so sad, even in my worst rage, I would never stab or kill someone ,

But like I always say, life is cheap in Thailand, just be vigilant out there.

Nothing good happens after 2am, 12pm, 8:30pm!

Maybe time for Samui to clean up its act or face a huge decline in tourists.

Haven't been to Samui in years, seems like it's changed into another Phuket, what a shame.

Speaking only of Chaweng, but during my last 2 visits I got the impression it was more of a sh*thole than both Patong and Pattaya. It seemed to me like all the scum who were even to low for the 2 aforementioned cities had relocated there. Sad, as 15 years ago it was a quite lovely.

Thailands love affair with meth strikes again?

Where did you glean "meth strikes again?" from the news article.

Mind boggling! Trolling this morning? Did I just take the bait?

Shame on me then!

honeymooned there 25yrs ago, lovely behond my dreams nearly went back in 2003 to look for land.what a mistake that would have been.what is happening here in Thailand, the past 20yrs has led to tooooooooo many flat bums who have just reaped the rewards and done NOTHING.

That's some achievement to be shittier and attract scummier scum than in those places. Shame really, as Samui 15-20 years back was a lovely place.

"Popular" should be replaced by "notorious" in the opening headline, in line with Haad rin.

Chaweng has an ugly beach ,(they put rocks out as a break water ) .I much prefer Lamai ,which has also a more low key night life.

Are you talking about the natural and protected reef at the northern end of Chaweng around Ark Bar? It's great when people with as much knowledge as you contribute to the debate biggrin.png

Good luck finding even a single rock in the water at the main stretch of Chaweng Beach.

It still is, apart from the odd 'No-go' area applied by many that live here.

Everything stays the same on Samui. 15 years ago I knew 3 foreigners killed in 6m months of each other , 2 by thais and one by a falang serial killer that they knew did some killings in Pattya. It has always been a great place.

Thailands love affair with meth strikes again?

I agree, meth and Thai whiskey, is a deadly combination for ones self, and innocent bystanders.

deceided long ago to leave the pirate islands for what they are ...

I wont be going there now, getting out of hand on the island, not safe anymore,

RIP to the victim, what defines "flirting" when the interpreter of one's actions is coming from a jealous mindset?

I can't help to wonder if there are not enough Thai people that are electricians or shop keeper's assistants?

I can do either of those two jobs and I wouldn't be a threat of killing someone. wai.gif

Same shit in Phuket after 9 yrs here ive seen it all and hate the island life..2 more moth and were off up north away from the village idiots.

I agree with you evadgib. Samui is a great place to live.

I am in my 15th year on Samui and I have never even seen a fight (apart from the occasional verbal with construction workers working late at night).

Unlicensed riding of motorbikes aside - wifey and I feel that Samui has to be one of the safest places. Mind you, we don't take drugs nor do we go out drinking until the sun rises.

More than 40 years ago - in my home town in the UK, I was often 'offered a fight' on a Friday night when walking home from the pub or the chippy. Samui is a kindergarten compared to that!

And as for the 'it used to be paradise 20 years ago' brigade - get a life people. Nowhere is the same after 20 years of development. Wifey and I were married on a beach in the Seychelles 25 years ago. Stunning place. Absolutely beautiful. We went back 15 year later - not the same of course. Loads of new hotels and development. Still stunning though.

A friend of mine was fed up with Samui when they started putting deck chairs and tables on Choengmon beach, so he built a house on a near-deserted beach in Sril Lanka. Guess what. Two years later they have built a new International airport less than 20 kilometers away, and they are now building a motorway to the area.

Fact of life. If you think that a place is great - so will lots of others - and it will definitely change. Move with the times or keep moving on. Progress will catch up with you. Sadly, there are also a few undesirable elements that follow progress

Yes everything is changing and we are more and more in slavery-called money and people will do anything due to these papers. So that the violence will grow up and where it has an end. It reads Everyone knows it does not end until the called money in slavery.

Is it me or is that photo weird? Guess his brother was into lady boys.

Apparently it is if you're a knife wielding maniac.

Funny answer.... it has nothing at all to do with the location, those two Burmese brothers could have killed themselves anywhere whistling.gif Pffffffff

Life must have an equivalent value in the UK where we currently see about 20,000 stabbings per year.

But, like I always say, I don't really know what people mean when they say, "life is cheap".
