Firefox going wild

Problem

Recently when using a bookmark Firefox is opening new windows on it´s own. Although I had opened a new tab for the new web site

Leads sometimes to 10+ open windows

Any idea what is happening?

Have you looked in Options to see what Firefox is doing at Startup?

Didn't because I never changed a thing. But will do now. Might be that crash caused setup changes. Will report back

Ctrl key sticking? or something resting on keyboard?

Sounds silly but it happens...

Look in Tools | Options | Tabs. Check the Open Links . . . option.

Get the Tab Mix Plus extension if you don't have it. You can do quite a lot with it.

I second the Tab Mix Plus extension.

The only reason I stick with FF is all the extensions I'm used to, but I'm really sick of how FF handles flash vids. Websites like Yahoo Finance, which has lots of flash adverts, jscript junk, etc. really try the patience. Eg, scroll down, it takes maybe 20 seconds to respond, in which time you probably made a second attempt to scroll, and about a minute later you find yourself at the bottom of the page and you know what's going to happen when you try to scroll up again.

Chrome doesn't handle the Yahoo Finance pages any better.

I've had the same thing happening sometimes lately with FF 31, seemingly, when I go to open a pdf file from the browser...

It doesn't open the pdf file, but instead, starts automatically opening endless new tabs in pretty quick succession... The only way I've found to stop it and get out is to kill the program.

I'm not sure, but I think it was happening when I had FF set to open pdf files with the Reader plug in within the browser window. When I changed the browser settings to use Acrobat Reader to open the files outside the browser, I wasn't getting the endless tab problem any more.

Have you tried in Safe Mode? I had this problem also until I deleted one of my extensions. You're going to hate me but I can't remember which one.

I also had this problem at one time. Turned out to be an extension problem. I deleted the extension causing the problem never to have the problem again. Again, I forget which extension it was. Start by disabling extensions until you find it.

Thanks

1. Do you remember if the extension had been recently installed?

2. Will check Tab Mix Plus and other suggestions

Well, Firefox is driving me even more crazy. Although down speed is always above 10MB now Firefox itself often does not react, clicking on the next Tab, no reaction, often freezes. Re-starting the PC itself yield nothing.

Could switch to Chrome but prefer FF.

What happens to bookmarks etc when FF is de-installed and re-installed?

Best to open the Bookmarks menu and export out your existing FF bookmarks to an HTML file. Then, if you ever need or want to reinstall Firefox clean, you can simply import that same HTML bookmarks file back into Firefox and everything's fine.

Firefox Sync also can do the same thing, if you're careful about setting up the Sync settings properly ahead of time, and make sure you know your Sync log-in credentials. But Sync will handle a broader range of FF things beyond bookmarks, including add-ons, browser history, preferences, etc etc.

But my bookmarks are essential item for me, long developed and used constantly. So I always like to have the actual file stored away in a safe place... and not rely entirely on FF sync, even though I use it.

Get the Xmarks extension. I did this before I came to Thailand, logged in to FF and logged into Xmarks, my bookmarks came back with no problems. There is Firefox reset which gets rid of all your extensions and bookmarks, try that before un/reinstalling. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-does-not-work-common-fixes.

Most problems have to do with add/ons, extensions. The rest are handled by typing "About:Config". Several websites recommend certain settings.

I have problems with "Ghostery" from time to time. You can turn disable your add ons, one by one, and see if that helps. I love my "StumbleUpon" button and "Show me More" add on. Great for boring days, to discover new sites, videos, etc. "Readibility" works great for reading through forums easily.
