Fantastically interesting subject I know, but I am curious to hear anyone's ideas about the two options. I have a good unit already (solar) roof mounted 305 liter, but am looking to expand about 500-600 liter capacity. My contact recommends heat pump as the way to go, but as I said, I'm still feeling around for ideas and info. if anyone can be bothered to reply, I'd like to hear.

I have a roof mounted solar heating unit that leaks from the main tank and have been trying to find someone to repair it to no avail, finished up had to shut it down because it was leaking too much.

Sorry for butting into your thread but could you explain what a heat pump is because I am looking for a source of hot water the house is fitted with mixer taps throughout that are not being used anymore

I am in the Pattaya area

Thanks

Until you get a new solar heater installed, you might consider a Stiebel Eltron electric central heater. We have a 9000 watt version similar to the attached link, and it can heat water for two showers running concurrently. We have had it for three years and it seems to be a high quality product. We found the best price at Central Department store in Chiang Mai so check out your local outlet there.

A heat pump is a device that provides heat energy from a source of heat to a destination called a "heat sink". Heat pumps are designed to move thermal energy opposite to the direction of spontaneous heat flow by absorbing heat from a cold space and releasing it to a warmer one. A heat pump uses some amount of external power to accomplish the work of transferring energy from the heat source to the heat sink.

Thanks for the input, as above a heat pump is basically an AC compressor in reverse, with coil etc, dispelling cold air and putting heat into the contained water. A 9 BTU unit will easily heat and supply 10 bungalows so I am told. My solar unit needs boosting in the early AM when we have guests and on bad weather days. I think pound for pound the expense would be similar. Leaks can be tricky, especially if something is distorted or broken, but if not, good clean surfaces, and Teflon tape should theoretically do the job... hard to know without seeing it. But as above, the Siemens products are great for household use. For me, I'd need about 15 of them and that my friend will send my 30A (100 peak) meter to kingdom come. Thanks for the input all.

it all depends on the factors

-input water temperature,

-desired ºC hot water output,

-water volume drawn,

-ambient temperature.

because these factors vary a lot a generalising anwer is impossible.

Fantastic news!

Last week I found a very knowledgeable Thai man who could repair my Solar heating unit.

He found many leaks in the inner tank and repaired them, at one end of the tank he cut a portion out and replaced it with a stainless steel bit.

He also removed the thermostat and the Electric heating coil because it had deteriorated too much and in any event in this Country's climate really was never needed.

It took him three days to sort out the problems, now we have hot water again all around the house, just in time for the cold period now I can have an hot shower after my bike runs.

Anybody in the Pattaya area who need his services can PM me for his number
