Popular Post ozsamurai Posted September 23, 2014 Popular Post Posted September 23, 2014 Skype is stand alone, you register on their website a username and password. Install the software and then log in with your created account. You can even create an account from within the installed software. There is no need for an outlook anything, that's an email handling program.. Oz 3
MJCM Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 Look here to create an account for Skype https://login.skype.com/account/signup-form If you have a Microsoft Account or a Facebook Account you can use that
KittenKong Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 Simply download and install the standalone Windows desktop programme for Skype from the Skype website. Uninstall the built-in tiled Skype app for Win 8x which, like all tiled apps, is a nightmare. 1
uptheos Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 When installed buy yourself $10 of Skype time in case you need to call a land line or mobile. The calls are dirt cheap and your $10 lasts a very long time. I have found this very handy when needing to speak to someone at length in UK. It's about $1 an hour, maybe less. You can use it in Thailand for pennies and it won't show your name or any number. Just comes up as a random Skype number or 'unknown'. Good for sending very cheap texts abroad too. 1
brimacthai Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 Yeah I had the same problem... I just Googled how to install Skype without a Microsoft account and got this link... works a treat! http://www.skype.com/go/getskype-full
ETatBKK Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 the Skype app ( modern Windows, or metro ), there is only one way of creating a new Skype account - by creating a Microsoft account, by default. if you don't want to create a Microsoft account, download the Skype desktop application from Skype.com, then you could create an individual Skype account. there are few more advantages as well. the Skype metro app doesn't have the complete functions as the desktop application. for example, if someone pushes a picture to you, you are not able to see it on the Skype app; or someone leaves a voice message, and you are not able to pick it up from the Skype app. last but not the least, you have a choice of linking your individual Skype account with Microsoft account, also you could link your Skype account with your Outlook address book. for simplicity reason, I didn't do neither of these.
MediaWatcher Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 A lot of misinformation go to https://login.skype.com/account/signup-form and create your Skype account...do NOT click on "Microsoft Account" or "Facebook," once done use your "Skype Name" and password to log on, to desktop Skype. This does NOT create any links to Microsoft's Outlook.com site or https://login.live.com/.

I also like to keep all my accounts separate, I hate, that by default, Microsoft wants to link them all together without giving the user an option to opt out. They seem to be trying to take more control... I would dump Skype, now that Microsoft owns it, in favour of Viber, except a Viber account is tied to your mobile therefore, unlike Skype, you can only have one account, unless you have two mobiles. With Skype I can have multiple accounts on my PC, all opened at the same time.
slipperylobster Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 Can use yahoo, microsoft, facebook for chat/video. Can call a phone using skype alone (with fee). For my cellphone calls to the USA, I find it convenient just to use 00500. It is usually about 35 baht for quite a long phone call....enough for my purposes, as I only call my mom once a week. No need skype.

I kept trying to call 800 numbers (mostly banks) in the states with no success from my cell. The banks even offered collect calling but I still could not get past my cell robot operator. I threw $10 on Skype and now these calls go right through and as far as I can tell they are still free. I also use Skype for an occasional international toll call and I'm still not under $9. Hard to beat for my needs. Strangest thing about Skype to me is that the video calls within Thailand are often not great, but to and from Thailand are awesome. Something about my call going through an entire ocean improves picture quality?? 1
rbt Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 I would advise against using skype. It uses a lot of RAM. Use instead google talk.

What a load of rubbish, Skype, without video, only uses 120,000K's of RAM, which these days is not much considering 1000,000k's is a gig....yes I know 1000,000 is not the right way but makes more sense than a thousand, thousand k's.

I clicked on your link and my skype was up and running in 2 minutes. I have no idea why they would make it so hard to make this work without outlook. I spent at least 3 fricken hours trying every god damn thing and was pulling my hair out. Thanks again.................

I did this 2 years ago. Put $10 on my Skype account. I thought I had to, but have no need for it. It is now at $9.67, and Skype is always emailing me that if I don't use some in the next 7 days, they will delete my $9.67. They do offer hoops to jump through to get it back, but why bother? Buy it only if you are going to use it that day. Don't buy it in advance. They will find a way to eliminate it.
Keesters Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 Installed Skype only recently without need for Outlook account. I use email from my own domain name. Never saw a problem and didn't have to go asking how to do it.

I have had these messages that they will delete the amount, of credit, if not used ..... but they never do.... My original $10.00 credit from several years ago is now $6.00. Skype to Skype calls always work well .... My Skype is setup for Canada, which means 800 numbers (in north America) calls usually to my Canadian bank, are free... it always works well! Skype to land line is very cheap!
JDGRUEN Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 Use a Skype only Login / Sign in ... I never use Microsoft's near forced login on anything would never link my Facebook account to another site or software... The Opting for the Microsoft Sign in - or not opting out it is where the problem begins.
JDGRUEN Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 People who think Skype is a memory hog - must have issues with Skype video quality - and maintaining connections ... Almost all those issues are directly related to the strength and condition of the Internet / WiFi connection on both ends... as would be expected... Skype Video calls for me - have been an outstanding experience... I have recently used LINE video calls - I receive on my PC LINE App ... and it works quite well - The limited screen size is what I don't like with LINE...

I also use skype on old laptop (5 year old) it runs fine and fast. Mine clocks in at around 90,000 kb my Google Chrome browser uses more memory than that. Displaying auto start for Skype when windows is loading helps, this can be done in the settings window of the Skype. Also disable the Skype - ad on from web browser makes a difference.
derekwyoung Posted September 25, 2014 Posted September 25, 2014 Win 8 normaly has skype pre instaled. I didnt like that version and wanted the old version so I instaled "skype for windows" from my browser
