PM Prayut calls for collaboration from southerners to bring about sense of security

BANGKOK, 29 September 2014 (NNT) - The Prime Minister has called on residents of Thailand’s southern border area to work with the authority to bring about the sense of security to the conflict-torn region.

Prime Minister Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha said on Sunday that the change of the armed forces leader in charge of the Deep South should not worry residents in the area as all strategies have been planned and the army will collaborate with the Southern Border Provinces Administration Center (SBPAC) to implement all measures.

Concerning the peace talks with the southern insurgents, the Premier said that there must be more clarity in the structure of the meet, which could be multi-lateral — not only bi-lateral, and involves ideas from different groups of people that will be utilised in developing Thailand further.

Gen. Prayut went on to say that since it is less than a year before the ASEAN Community is officially in effect and there will be more labor movement within the Southeast Asian region, Thailand needs to have peace otherwise no development will come about.

He also asked southerners to refrain from collaborating with any suspects responsible for act of violence and to convince them to cease such actions and help with the development of the country instead.

Maybe the PM should offer the residents of Thailand’s southern border area free passes to see the highly patriotic 16th century movie "The Legend of King Naresuan Part V” to encourage “Love and Harmony” as part of its “Return to Happiness” campaign.

Oh wait. What is now referred to as the Southern Thailand area was part of a peaceful Muslim Kingdom that was CONQUERED by the Ayutthaya Siamese Kingdom in the 14th Century and has remained forcibly part of the Kingdom of Thailand ever since then. Does anyone really think the Malay-Thais should now be interested in developing the Kingdom of Thailand?

Whatever the rights and wrongs of the situation , one thing is clear - there certainly needs to be more time spent in addressing the situation than previous and present governments have given it - do the inhabitants of Bangkok actually have any idea what is going on there and how many people are getting killed on an almost daily basis ?

Yes, that was the Kingdom of Pattani, and included what is now northern Malaysia, a prosperous trading center and the center of Islamic learning for SE Asia. The Kingdom of Pattani seems mostly to have been happy to be a vassal kingdom to the Siamese/Thai crown--it retained its own king & the royal line continues to this day, spanning northern Malaysia & Southern Thailand. The kingdom was split by British colonialism & agreements with Thailand, leading to forced integration into the Thai state & attempted forced assimilation, thence to rebellion. But it's an exceedingly complex situation that just goes on and on, rather like the conflict in Palestine. This gov't doesn't have a chance of achieving resolution (Think: every US government thinking it'll resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict).
