I'm relocating to BKK next year and considering living in either Sukhumvit (Thong Lo-Ekkamai) or in the Sathorn area (to be close to St Andrew school).

In researching these areas online it seems like Sukhumvit is a hub for expats - expensive, but lively with loads of bars/restaurants/entertainment. Sathorn seems to be more of a business area which is less expensive to live in but doesn't have the same amount/quality of housing / entertainment / bars / restaurants.

I'd appreciate any info or advice that anyone could give me about moving to wither of these two areas.

Thanks,

There are vast numbers of condos available for rent in Bangkok (we have over 2,000 listed here http://asiapropertyworld.com/thai-properties/condo-apartment-for-rent-bangkok). Most rental contracts will be for 12 months although some do accept a shorter 6 month term.

Your comments on Sukhumvit and Sathorn are pretty much spot on but don't dismiss the possibility of living a bit further out from those places. It only takes a few minutes on the Skytrain to travel a couple of stops which widens your choice (and lowers the price) of condos available for rent. E.g. Onnut has seen significant development in the last few years and is only 2 stops and 4 minutes away from Ekkamai on the BTS.

If you have the time it might be best if you stayed in a serviced apartment or a hotel for a couple of weeks to get the feel for your chosen area(s) before signing a long term contract.

Good luck with your search smile.png

Thanks for the info. I do have accomodation for the first month so I'll get a chance to look around before deciding.

Whats the area around On Nut like for restaurants/shopping etc?

Looking around is definitely the right thing to do and if you are on a tight budget you might find something cheap and cheerful in your chosen area that isn't listed on line. To get an idea of prices you could browse the condos we have listed for rent in On Nut here http://asiapropertyworld.com/thailand-homes-condos-apartments-for-rent-in-bangkok-on-nut-xctytha1-133

On Nut has a Thai style market / outdoor food & drink area (outdoor but under cover) that is open in the evenings and adjacent to the BTS station. So is a large Tesco Lotus and a Big C is a 5 minute walk away. There is a limited choice of restaurants but a huge number are only a short BTS ride away.

If you are out late at night then a taxi from the Thai Visa Lounge on Soi 7 to On Nut will cost you less than 100 baht provided you can get them to turn the meter on tongue.png

I have lived in Sathorn for about 8 years - bottom and top. It is a relatively quiet area but not well supplied with shopping and restaurants. I recently discovered Sukhumvit after being in Bangkok for 10 years! Yes, I know. It looks really good for restaurants and bars and wouldn't mind living there one day. But the noise might put me off.

I really recommend Goldengateasia.com as an excellent estate agents that I have used at least twice and the owner can get discounts on rent. They have a great database to search online. I checked recently, and you can get similar prices for equivalent prioperties there as in Sathorn, as both are quite expensive areas of Bangkok. Wherever you go, the main concern is convenient public transport (BTS or MRT). That is more important than location. You don't want to have to walk more than 10 mins to a stop in the Bangkok climate. I also prefere to be high up for the views and also to avoid mosquitoes.

If you're mentioning Sathorn and St Andrew's because you will be working there, then you should be advised that commuting from Tong-Lo/Ekkamai will take

30+ mins one way every day to Saladaeng or Chongnonsi stations. So you're probably adding up to an hour to your daily commute to live along Sukhumvit.

Personally I live along Sukhumvit and have done for years. I started out in one of the many many monthly rentals available, at Phrakanong. You mentioned

relocating here, so if you have no real prior experience/knowledge I'd recommend starting out with inexpensive accommodations, then reassessing after you've

been here a while. Prices can vary wildly and very reasonable places are available but not always easily found on the internet which is dominated by property

management company's. There was a recent thread about places around Onnut, extremely reasonable prices to be had there.

I'll be working in the Siam square area, so I guess anywhere on the BTS will be ok for me to commute to work - anything around 20-30 mins is fine.

For my son we are looking at british international schools and St Andrews is one we're interested in - hence thinking about living in that area to make the school run as quick/simple as possible. Would a school run from On Nut->Sathorn be painful? It looks like the choice would be taxi/school bus pickup or BTS to asok+metro to sala daeng.

My GF works in-between the Saladaeng and Chongnongsi BTS stations. With a 5-7 minute walk on each end it takes her

about 35-40 mins each way during rush hours from Ekkamai BTS. If you're farther out, like OnNut, add two minutes for

each station, say 5 minutes. You'd be hard pressed to beat this amount of time using ground transport and it would also

be horribly unpredictable. BTS runs pretty much like clockwork and probably no advantage to switch to the metro (MRT).

If you're concerned about your sons safety and he's not of an age to travel the BTS alone, personally I'd rather trust him

to the school bus than a taxi. If he's old enough to travel alone, plenty of school kids on the BTS daily.

I don't really know about St Andrews but a quick search turned up a campus at Sukhumvit 107 right near the Bearing BTS

station. That'd probably be more convenient if you chose to live at OnNut and the curriculum meets your requirements.

Just curious why you don't have the Siam Sq/Ratchaprasong area on your list of potential locations? Especially since you will work at Siam Square?

Have you been in the BTS coming to Siam at peak hours? Sardine would be the most accurate representation, not pleasant at all.

I live next to Ratchadamri station (Silom line), one stop from Siam and one from Saladaeng. A couple of minutes on the BTS, or a few minutes to the skywalk, then covered stroll to Siam. Central world, Langsuan Rd, and Chitlom station also a very short stroll away. A relatively peaceful, quiet area for Bangkok, which can feel REALLY nice when you are feeling closed in by concrete. Obviously, plenty of shopping and restos nearby.

Unless you are on a tight budget, you should really consider something in this area as well as the others you listed. The convenience is unbeatable, and it is a rare walkable area in BKK with some greenery nearby (Bangkok Sports Club) as well. Check out the places on Soi Mahadlekluang 1-3, see if they are within your budget (some older buildings aren't that expensive)...your family will thank you later.
