Thai police force facing shortage of personnel

The thing you should ask yourself is "Would there REALLY be any change since they are usually not there when you need them...?"

How true!

Just a few minutes ago on Channel5 this nice but tearful lady runs to the gate where you can see two police officers just arriving. She seems to tell them 'you're too late'. Next she shows a bloody knife and says "I already stabbed him three times in his privates, before he could work his wicked ways with me",

The actual scene had a chair strategically placed, but as man I did cringe a bit with every vicious stab rolleyes.gif

Maybe our Pol. Captain Chalarm can help in setting up a promotional campaign. As erudite man of the world, having written constitutions, and made praising remarks, surely he can come with some bright ideas. If only the public realised how much they have the police to thank for.

Maybe start with a slogan like 'any day is a good day for presents'

A bit off topic, but I heard from a Thai friend last weekend, that the aforementioned Captain had passed. Anyone know anything about this??

Things may have changed, but last weekend he was still alive it would seem.

Pay them decently and things will change.

Police get a pittance of a salary and subsidies it with corruption.

100k a month and one corrupt indiscretion and your out.

It's simple really.

I think the root of the problem is the method of payment for the police is divided between the government and bribes so you're right that they need to be paid properly by the government. I suppose the reason nothing has been done before is that it might require extra tax if the government had to foot the salaries themselves. By using bribes to top up the police pay the government doesn't get blamed for the extra cost.

This analysis flies in the face of logic. It has been recommended elsewhere by advisory groups to drastically reduce the number of police in Thailand. (Don't ask me for the source, cos it was long ago I read this report...but I'll try to dig it up). Thailand has a police force one and a half times the size of USA, UK, Australia and several European countries forces (Per 100,000 population). The obvious difference is, that the police in more developed countries earn more, are better educated, and thus less likely to be corrupt (the link is fact, not fiction), and better able to manage the task of policing, through better training and interaction with the public they protect. The report was advising to slash 70,000 police jobs. Educate the rest, pay them what you save by not having the bottom feeding 70,000, and everyone lives happily ever after. Simple. Let them retire I say.coffee1.gif

Sounds about right to me. There seems to be a tendency for over staffing here and not only in the police. I remember going to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs when I wanted to get married. I was amazed at the amount of of time and people involved in such a simple process. One woman just took the papers without looking at them and used one of her large number of rubber stamps on them. I think we waited about an hour for that and I'd be very surprised if she didn't need a masters degree to wield all those complicated rubber stamps.

Now, right now, is the time to turn around Thai law enforcement from a universal laughing stock to a respected agency.

Cull all the ranks retiring/firing/maybe jailing the corrupt/physically mentally disabled and quit trying to fix a broken egg !

Hire a new, foreign, proven/educated/experienced Supt. Of Police and

have him/staff prepare a total new set of hiring qualifications including :

Ages 21 to 35

Physically fit, ( test )

2 years university

Background check

Reward top candidates with 2 or even 3 times present starting salaries/benefits and something brand new -- THAI RESPECT !

Doesn't seem to be to bad a list apart from the 2 years university. You don't mention what subjects or maybe that doesn't matter. There are some well known ex policemen with degrees who I wouldn't trust to be police.

With a country with 2000 generals vs. 200 generals in the US, what do you expect? coffee1.gif

Two thousand generals? blink.png

I last read one thousand. But hey! How much difference does a thousand generals, give or take, make in a country that never's needed to go to war?

Yes the figure is there abouts , they promote their own to ensure a big pension, just another thai scam. Tenure not ability is what counts and as they do their own promotion from within they look after their own interests..
