Thailand and Russia agree to boost trade and investment

NAY PYI TAW, 13 November 2014 (NNT) – The Thai and Russian leaders have affirmed to continue promoting bilateral cooperation in trade and investment, especially in the agricultural and logistic sectors.

At the 25th ASEAN Summit in Myanmar on Wednesday, Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha had an opportunity to hold a bilateral meeting with his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev. The two sides congratulated each other for their long-standing ties ahead of the 120th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2017.

As Thailand was a popular destination for Russian travelers, Gen Prayut assured Mr Medvedev that the Kingdom was a safe place to visit and that his government would put in the best effort to ensure the well-being of all visitors.

The Thai premier thanked Russia for increasing its imports of Thai agricultural products, including fruits, vegetables and canned foods, expressing hope that the value of bilateral trade would double to about 10 billion US dollars by the year 2016. On this occasion, he also extended his invitation to Russia to make investment in Thailand’s infrastructure development projects.

In return, Mr Medvedev voiced readiness to drive forward the two countries’ trade and investment cooperation, saying he would further expand the market for Thai produces within Russia. The Russian premier considered Thailand one of Russia’s leading partners in ASEAN and insisted that bilateral cooperation would be increased in many areas, such as energy, tourism and cultural exchange. He also invited Gen Prayut to make an official visit to Russia when convenient.

The old General really is trying to piss off the US, UK and Europe... going on the sides of China and Russia... he's playing a dangerous game!

But before the Genreral it was Yingluck and Thaksin who started annoying the West. They really do not understand economics. The money coming from WESTERNERS is not coming from Chian or russia. So they all started annoying westerners and say they will suck up to the others? that's why Thailand is in a little bit of economic downturn at present but they have not yet bought the calculator that actually counts!

From our dear friends at Wikipaedia

Official figures of trade volume published by two countries contradict each other.

  • According to Thai sources, trade with Russia in 2008 reached 2.11 billion US dollars; Thailand has a trade deficit of 1.76 billion US dollars.[1] Russia exports mineral resources, while Thailand exports auto parts, electronics and foodstuffs.[1]
  • According to Russian customs service, Russian exports to Thailand in 2008 amounted to 1.23 billion, imports to 1.49 billion, leaving Russia with a deficit of 254 million US dollars.[2] In total, trade with Thailand is only 0.4% of Russian foreign trade.[2] According to Russian embassy in Bangkok, Thailand is Russia's largest trading partner in South-eastern Asia and third largest buyer of Russian ferrous metals worldwide.[3]

Seems Thailand is still telling Porkies! With all the billion of trade how come the GDP is 387.3 billion USD (2013)

Au contraire. The French, along with the rest of the EU have today called for democratic elections by October 2016 and have stated Thailand will be boycotted by EU leaders until this takes place. Bearing in mind the US have of course 'expressed their concern' also, Prayuth has nowhere else to turn to for comfort passifier.gif.pagespeed.ce.4LsapYv4zC.gi BUT China and Russia. But he should be aware that when you lie down with dogs you pick up a lot of fleas.

I think Thailand sleeping with these two makes it an AXIS of Scabies - MANGE - much worse than fleas

A Freudian slip? October 2015 was the date stated by the French, though even your date is looking very optimistic...........................coffee1.gif

You are referring to the interview with the the ambassador of France with the "other" paper I guess.

I can't quote the article but I urge people to read it. I thought it was very positive for Thailand.

Sure, if you regard the European Union Countries banning all official trips to and from Thailand, reiterating the need for the "government" to return to democratic constitutional rule, with free and transparent elections to be held in October 2015, and that they would be keeping a close watch on developments, you could say it was..........................

Russian old tanks for rotten Thai rice, maybe? Because the PM has promised all the fresh good rice to his Chinese friends for bits of obsolete rail stuff...

Or an exchange of 'character dancers', Russian 'Natashas' to Thailand, Thai 'Nois' and 'Porns' to Russia, might attract fresh tourist money here too...

Other ideas, please?

Maybe a few cold war subs thrown in, .

They say

"If you see a red fighter jet in tsky, its probably Chinese

If you see a Blue and Red fighter jet, its probably Vietnamese.

If you don't see a fighter Jet at all.....

Its probably Thai".

Good luck Yingluck

Is Thailand less 'democratic' than China is today? Yes/No

Is 'Europe' speaking to China like it speaks to Thailand? Yes/No

No + No seems obvious. Whyyy?

Nobody can call me a 'Thai nationalist' (I'm Pharang), but it makes me angry.

The more so it is (for a small bit) not only hypocrisy from 'Europe', feeling the need(!!!) to go on courting China ('s economical and financial power) while turning a blind eye on the, huge, human rights issues, global, environmental issues, of China, while it is selfishly abusing (of) the whole World!

'Europe' does know very little, when anything, about Thailand, so it is very easy to manipulate, and that is the evil work of a few Thais, through costly lobbying and PR campaigns, as remote as possible from the factual truth, totally biased, pure des-information and lies!

Yes, Thai friends, for their selfish interests, their power and greed, and for revenge, the Shins don't hesitate to deeply damage the 'perception' Europe, the USA, ..., has from Thailand, destroying the patient, laborious work of generations of Thai diplomats, and even of members of your Royal Family! That is not a shame, it is a scandal, I would not hesitate to call 'high treason', against their home(!) country! And what is done about it, against it? Nothing! Whyyy not?

(Alas, the pantomime the present PM feels wrongly compelled to present to the outside world, to tell glorious tales on the homefront, has, IMHO, as much credibility and content in foreigners' opinions as the shopping and PR 'MoU trips' of the previous so-called one, who at least had her gender and looks for herself, and will have as much tangible positive effect in the end for the concept 'Thailand' in the World: none whatsoever!)

P.S.: instead of saying 'have a cigar', should one say 'have a banana', here, sigh!

With a strong baht and collapsing rouble, surely Thai exports will suffer?. Or have I got that the wrong way around?.

well said a banana republic for sure

The bananas in Thailand are small, not large and sweet like South America. I been to Europe during the cold war and they had bigger bananas than in Thailand. I don't think Russia is gonna be happy with Thai bananas.

Russia has little foreign exchange, they are gonna have to trade gas or oil for Thai foodstuff. Good luck with that.

Europeans and Americans had a very bad time recognizing that the world is changing.....

Doubtful. I'd think they are very good at recognizing that the world is changing. They both are dealing with a changing world in the best way possible, at least the best way possible for them which I am thankful for.
