Thailand to ratify low-carbon solution pact
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- The Cabinet yesterday approved the plan for Thailand to ratify the "Draft Colombo Declaration - For the Promotion of Next Generation Low-Carbon Transport Solution in Asia", government spokesman Yongyuth Mayalarp said.

The ratification would be done during the Intergovernmental Eighth Regional Environmentally Sustainable Transport (EST) Forum in Asia, to be held in the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo from November 19-21, he said.

The draft's key content declares the shared intention of countries, including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, Maldives, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Russia, South Korea, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Vietnam. It also includes international organisations, bilateral- or multi-party organisations, non-governmental agencies and sustainable transport experts.

It is a very good idea for Thailand to sign every pact or treaty they can get. They continuously violate free trade agreements and pollution treaties and no-one ever takes them to task. Example: Thailand has a free trade agreement with Australia that includes beer. Have you ever seen VB in Thailand? Didn't think so.

Do any of us think, that because Thailand has ratified this pact, that they'll actually abide by it?

Isn't the pact just a declaration and not an action plan? Words are cheap. It's the action that requires effort.

Meanwhile the government plans in its 2015 budget to purchase 489 NGV buses in the first quarter of next year; build ten vehicle bridges into Bangkok by 2021; continue to operate its diesel-fueled trains; and build seven new coal-fired power plants. It's action will be to help the other pact members understand why Thailand must be different.
