Get rid of only accepting payments as cash. It's crazy going into the land office and seeing others walking around with large bags full of money.

I understand what you say. But from experience the vendor will only accept cash at the Land Office. I understand that, as sad a reflection on this country's inability to trust ANYONE here, whether it be banks/land offices. How many keep their Chanotes at a bank here, or even in their own home?

Even if the information was forthcoming what action would be taken ?

Oops sorry that's a rhetorical question !

Did I read right , rhetorical or did you mean historical NKK

Both will do really

When my wife purchased land to have our house built in Khon Kaen, she had to pay 3,000 baht to move the paperwork from the bottom to the top of the pile. Then, there was the 3,000 baht payment to have the land properly surveyed, and an additional 5,000 baht to have the architect's drawings approved by 7 different people in the same office. I considered them "expedite fees".

What made your wife think that she was special enough to have her name moved from the bottom to the top of the list over others who were there before her?

You and her are both as corrupt as the officials.

Sviss Geez.... you either lived a Very sheltered life or you are just another wind-up merchant... the latter I fear... and you sure are not Sviss..... just taking the Pizzzz...blink.png

It's not about being special and they are not as corrupt as the Land offices staff. Case in point the Udon Thani office where my partner waited at the bottom of the pile for over a year to get a land title survey done. In cases you do not move from the bottom but just stay there until you give in and pay the extra to the corrupt pricks.

Let's face it, we all pay these bribes for our own benefit, otherwise why pay them?

Agreed - although I hate corruption, here it is the only way to get things done.

So I did it twice

Once to customs to turn a blind eye to the fact that I only had a tourist visa when I shipped my household furniture here. ( Yes furniture is cheap here, but it doesn't last unless you buy good stuff and then it is as expensive as in farangland )

The second was at the Land Office when buying a condo in a block that had 55% foreign ownership. The developer must have originally bribed the Land Office to issue over the 49% of foreign ownership Chanotes.

He built the Condo block next door and it is 56% foreign owned. Now even with a Foreign Chanote you cannot sell unless you sell to a Thai or convert it to being owned by a Thai Company. I suspect there are 100s of condo blocks around the country in the same situation

Wasn't it Gen. Prayuth who wanted the government to be run by bureacrats instead of politicians because the latter couldn't be trusted?

Would it not be easier just to audit all govt employees(incl. land office) and see who is unusually wealthy? On a salary of around 15k per month, it always strikes me as odd that the staff are driving around in Mercedes and Porshes, often live in huge gated mansions, and on occasion splurge out half a billion buying a few shares on the SET. They might be canny investors or amazing savers but I'm not convinced. PS check these employees gardeners, chauffers and maids assets too, sometimes money gets lost or mistakenly transferred, accidents will happen.

Even if they uncover wrongdoing, nothing would happen. Did Transport Ministry Permanent Secretary, Supoj Saplom go to prison?

You have never bought land have you?

It's not a choice.

Why is it a benefit to give money away for something that should be done as service?

You are not real bright, kid.

"...it always strikes me as odd that the staff are driving around in Mercedes and Porshes,"

It always strikes me as odd that some posters continue to make up allegations as ridiculous as this one. Unless, of course, you can substantiate your claim with, let's say, just one example?

facebook pics of samui police chief shows him standing proudly next to his brand new, top of the line Mercedes Benz(also had a good few new looking Harleys). Also lot of pics showing the same guy at his prime beachfront cafe. Like I was trying to say, not bad going for a career civil servant on a peppercorn salary. These pics were shown in several news reports and discussed on forum threads, try using the newfangled info search tool rather than naively deny a corrupt civil servant sector, its called Google.

This is one example, as you asked.

You are definitely correct about those pesky facts getting in the way.

By the way, do you have any facts or links about how Uncle Suthep was charged, found guilty and went to jail for all the things that you accuse him of?

So what is the reason for widely existing corruption?

  • First is bureaucracy. It is the fertile soil on which corruption grows.
  • Second there are no fixed rules what the officials have to do upon payment of regular fees and especially in which time and what a customer can ask for.
  • Third some regulations are not clear which open the doors to arbitrariness.
  • Finally corruption has always been regarded as a way of living and was not really investigated and punished consequently.

Taking care of these points could change things basically
