The amount of women that work in bars is is very very low when contrasted with the population of the country. Many western men here have a skewed perspective of this country and its citizens. I would consider the domestic sex trade, which is probably much more brothel based, and stocked with just part time people to make up more of the sex industry.

As english is obviously not your native lingo i will explain, the farang oriented lady bar scene is a very small part of the Thai pay for play industry, the number of women involved in the karaoke, escort, student sponsorship, barbershop, hairdressor, office worker freelance mia noi and brothel scene far exceeds the farang oriented beer bars. Because farangs often like the exotic look of a small brown lao babe, they can find employment and possibly marriage through the bar scene.... education and social graces not required as their customers are often of similar style. Often these farm girls are bright yet earthy and bring a nasty sweetness that is irresistable ... proceed with caution.

Personally I tend not to use sweeping statements like all western men say bar girls. I would say it depends on the places you go. As I don't bother to go to the 'bar girls' places, I don't here it from people. Just to answer your question, I am guessing that bar girl would be a politer way of saying hooker, whore, prostitute, girl of the night. Once you have been here in Thailand for a while the bar scene is hardly appealing in my opinion and the only times I get dragged along, is when I have visitors from overseas, who are on holiday and want to see the sights, a bit like Blackpool really for the Brits.

I would also say that out of all the friends I know who have Thai wives, not one of them is a ex bar girl, which I am not knocking them, as with everything and everyone in life, I believe you should respect. All the Thais know an ex bar girl and after a while I believe a Westerner can tell. I am not speaking about bar girls in a derogatory way, just to make it clear.

What does it matter if they worked the bars or not, it's what they are and do now that counts. If I found out now that my wife was a bargirl, it would not make any difference to me. What she did before she met me is none of my business, and vice versa.
