November 26, 201411 yr Locals demand foundation for HIV/Aids people relocateDethawee TheewarangkoolThe NationChon BuriBANGKOK: -- More than 200 local people yesterday demanded that a foundation move out of their hometown after it began taking in Aids patients.Locals are accusing the Glory Hut Foundation of failing to follow proper sanitation, which they say is spreading fear in the neighbourhood and adversely affecting local businesses. The foundation, located in downtown tambon Nong Preu of Chon Buri's Bang Lamung district, has up to 48 HIV-positive people under its care."They don't have anywhere else to go," the foundation's chief Pornsawan Chrispirak said yesterday.Lang Noen Community's chairman Wichien Weluwan and the community board's advisor Boonlert Mekjan have, meanwhile, gathered signatures to back the relocation demand.Operators of small hotels say they have been losing customers since the foundation began taking in those living with Aids about three months ago."They feel unsafe," one of the operators said.Pornsawan is set to meet local people today and talk about their demand to have the foundation relocated. November 26, 201411 yr Popular Post Do these people understand how you get HIV? I am pretty you don't get it from living in the same neighborhood . Likely not, and probably don't care. Sad bunch of ignorant bigots.
November 26, 201411 yr Popular Post Education is key - Lets hope they get to stay and understanding emerges.
November 27, 201411 yr had to read the article 4 times to try and understand what these people are complaining about - and I still don't get it Maybe their hotel rates are down because they have a disease called greed and symptoms of poor attitude - name and shame them as someone already mentioned - education is the key but I fear it would be a waste of time
November 27, 201411 yr No pictures,. That's in case the camera steals the souls of the 'local residents'.
November 27, 201411 yr Welcome to Thailand: the land where nothing works, nobody knows anything and nobody cares! Disgusting how these "buddhists" don't care about people with a terminal disease, but do care about their silly little business...
November 27, 201411 yr Popular Post These poor people probably got kicked to the curb by their families and employers when it was discovered they have the virus. Now they face a lynch mob.
November 27, 201411 yr Welcome to Thailand: the land where nothing works, nobody knows anything and nobody cares! Disgusting how these "buddhists" don't care about people with a terminal disease, but do care about their silly little business... It was a Buddhist Abbot who founded what (I think) was the first hospice for HIV/AIDS at a Wat near Suphan Buri. It was his compassion and care that helped overcome a lot of the stigmas associated with the disease. I know it's easy to bag religion, but it was Thai Buddhists who were the first to actually help while the state stood idly watching.
November 27, 201411 yr Popular Post there is an HIV orphanage in Yasathon my wife and I have donated to and done a little help at... there is a Buddhist temple next door. The head monk build a giant <deleted> off wall between the two properties, so none of the the evil karma/spirits can get in to his temple. His theory is these children all must have been REALLY BAD PEOPLE in their LAST LIFE to be born with HIV. very sad place to visit, the children are lovely and just normal kid but because of their medical condition no government will invest anything into helping them because 'they'll all going to die anyway'
November 27, 201411 yr Take a look at : www.gloryhutfoundation.or.th/ Like some others in the area, I am a fairly frequent visitor to this worthwhile project, with a few, well needed supplies. If any Thai Visa members in the locality feel that they could provide any kind of assistance, the Glory Hut residents are always most appreciative!
November 27, 201411 yr A new kind of leprosy villages is in the making. If they are looking for a location- how about Koh Tao as not many want to go there anyway. Happiness to all!
November 27, 201411 yr Theres a lot of hate Thai in this thread. Theres both good and bad ppl in all our countries, lets hope they find some middle ground here.
November 27, 201411 yr It all stems from ignorance & superstition. My kids were taught about HIV at school & as others have mentioned, education is the key not only to understanding HIV.

Where did the term "Not in my neighborhood" originate? Not in Thailand, that's for sure.
November 27, 201411 yr before calling the residents ignorant, superstitious, inhumane, apathetic, etc., read the first line carefully. it reads "Aids patients". if that doesn't make sense to you or think that it's the same as HIV, those residents probably know something we don't. when the condition of a person with HIV (HIV+ or HIV-positive) progresses to AIDS, that's when a number of diseases infect the patient. some can be treated easily, some difficult, some impossible to cure. simply put, AIDS patients get infected more easily and become infective themselves. there's probably a better way to deal with the situation, but i'd be alarmed myself if the incurable form of tuberculosis is within a stone's throw away from my kids' school and our home.

Ahm...what? HIV destroys your immune -system (at worst), so you are easier infected with all kinds of .... That doesn't mean, you carry any more diseases, than any other person, you are just easier infected. HIV - patients do not contract any "special" kind of deadly viruses. So...what is the better way, to deal with it? Put them in camps, far away from the city? Isolate them?

I am a practicing buddhist myself, my point is thai buddhism is not real buddhism, it is superstition and animism and a very small amount of the real deal. Of course there are some who understand what its about but most dont have a clue.
November 27, 201411 yr More evidence of failure in the Thai education system. That kind of reaction was understandable 40 years ago. Now its a DISGRACE.
November 27, 201411 yr People with the HIV virus that develops into Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome actually die from diseases that we all get/could get at any time, most of us with healthy immune systems can fight them off and survive, people that have developed AIDS are exceptionally prone to Cancer and Pneumonia and also have a higher chance of developing early dementia, do a google search on the disease before posting utter nonsense You might also find it interesting to learn about how many times our bodies immune system fights off cancer over a year without us even knowing we had it. And just to clarify HIV is what is and causes the disease - AIDS is not a disease I'm going to stop my subscription to thread as of now - there are some real stupid people out in force posting on TVF today

Isolate them? no treat them with proper medication and they will generally live long normal happy lives - I know that there is now a program in Thailand to treat these people as was recently published in a news article on TVF, what I don't understand is why there people that are not in the program - I thought it was free and open to everyone

So...what is the better way, to deal with it? Put them in camps, far away from the city? Isolate them? AIDS patients get infected more easily, hence, get more diseases than a healthy person. look up opportunistic infections and tick which ones any healthy person you know have been infected with. infections among AIDS patients are also more difficult to treat. i don't know of any "special viruses", but there are strains and variants of bacteria, parasites, viruses, and cancer's (Kaposi's sarcoma) that infect HIV/AIDS patients more effectively and severely. as for better ways to deal with it, sorry i don't have the answers. i am simply stating that it's so easy to judge the residents when we don't share their worries and concerns.
