UDON THANI: -- A British man, wanted for 17 counts of sexual violation and molesting girls under 14 in the United Kingdom, was arrested on Tuesday at a local school in Kumphawapi district in Udon Thani where he worked as a teacher, Immigration Bureau commissioner Pol Lt General Sakda Chuenpakdee said yesterday.

Suspect Robert David Hastings, 61, initially told police that he had been in Thailand since 2005 and, had a Thai wife. He went on to say he had returned to the UK to sort out his assets before settling here. He told police he had contacted UK police about the arrest warrant which they insisted he return to face. However, his claim of having no money and request for financial aid didn't get any reply until he found out during the arrest that he was wanted in Thailand as well.

He most recently entered Thailand via the Nong Khai immigration checkpoint and has documents to work as a language teacher at the school until March 31 in 2015, Sakda said.

Assuming he's guilty in the UK of course, yet he is wanted there so the latter would indicate he is.

In my 29 years teaching here Ive come across many pedos. English teaching doesn't attract the cream if the crop.

Bangkok has improved a lot but the schools in Isan will take any white face and a lot of the weirdos and alkies who get refused work in Bangkok end up in Udon or Ubon.In Udon a few government institutions are hiring Africans and we all know what Thais think of them. We caught him with pictures of girls on his computer, and he had been using hi5 with a fake profile to stalk young girls. It made all of us squeamish when we would see him meeting with female students. Shortly after that, he resigned from the school to work in Udon Thani. I'm not surprised at the charges in the UK, and just hope he didn't harm anyone here in Thailand.

Can any of of the teachers here explain about how the criminal background check issue works -- or is supposed to work -- for teachers here in Thailand? Or even if the Thais have such a requirement?

I can understand that it's not really likely or practical to expect some government school in Nakhon Nowhere to obtain its own criminal background check on prospective teachers.

However, it's easily practical for such a school to make, and for the government to require, that as a pre-condition of hiring a new teacher that the TEACHER obtains and provides a criminal record clearance document from their home country.

What's the deal with that here???

Quite - mos of us find compassion hard enough though. Maybe when I'm 60, I'll be able to have compassion for everyone including pedophiles but now I am not far enough along the spiritual path. I am progressing though - I no longer belong to the "cut their balls off" brigade.

17 counts of innocent verdicts would count a hell a lot more, than fleeing to another country where the alleged offences aren't really prosecuted, eventhough they indeed are criminalized.

You bringing your own grandma - as well as others' - can't really hop on your high & mighty horse at this time.

Good on RTP to catch and send the accused back to his country to face the charges he was running away from. Hope to see much more of this in the future as well.
