Despite the weather being insufferably hot for us lot in the north eastern hemisphere, the Christmas holiday season is fast approaching in the UK. A trip to any large shopping mall or supermarket chain is about the only real indication that the countdown to Christmas is in full effect. Aside from indulging in copious amounts of luxury food & drinks, expats in Thailand have very little else to set the festive mood. So the Thai Expat TV team has had a dig into the forthcoming TV picks this month to spice up the holiday season and add some festive cheer for the expats not making the voyage home this year.

Christmas Picks 2014

Doctor Who (BBC1)

Jenna Coleman’s Clara returns to the bosom of the Tardis and Peter Capaldi’s tetchy Doctor, but is it just (as has been rumoured) for one last, climactic send-off? Of course we wouldn’t and couldn’t tell even if we knew. Suffice to say that it all takes place in the Arctic, Nick Frost plays Father Christmas and Michael Troughton, son of 1960s Time Lord Patrick Troughton, features.

Downton Abbey (ITV1)
A Downton Christmas special that’s actually set at Christmas for a change, with snow and all that, but which once again sees the Crawley family on the move, this time spending the season with the newly-wed Rose and Atticus (the episode was filmed at Alnwick Castle in Northumberland – the setting for Hogwarts in several of the Harry Potter films). Matthew Goode guest stars, George Clooney won’t, and Tom Branson and Daisy might both leave.

Esio Trot (BBC1)

Dustin Hoffman and Dame Judi Dench bring some seriously high-wattage star-power to Richard Curtis’s adaptation of Roald Dahl’s children’s classic about a shy old bachelor, Mr Hoppy, and his plan to win over a tortoise-loving neighbour (Dench). Whatever next – Tom Cruise reads Jackanory?

Strictly Come Dancing Christmas Special (BBC1)

Everyone seems to agree that it was refreshing to see two women presenting the latest series instead of the usual older man-younger woman combo, but Christmas sees the return of Sir Bruce Forsyth and his hoary gags. Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Lisa Riley, Louis Smith and Russell Grant are among the former celebrity contestants working their way through the ballroom repertoire.

Black Mirror Christmas Special (CH4)

Comedy of a much darker hue as Mad Men’s John Hamm – a big fan of the last series of Charlie Brooker’s dystopian drama – joins Rafe Spall and Game of Thrones’s Oona Chaplin for a one-off, 90-minute tale that will be, according to Channel 4, “the most mind-bending episode yet, showcasing three inter-woven stories of Yuletide techno-phobia”. Best to go easy on the sherry beforehand.

The Winter’s Tale (BBC2)

Choreographer Christopher Wheeldon’s full-length adaptation of Shakespeare’s play was The Royal Ballet’s biggest undertaking of 2014 – and a bold and colourful triumph to boot. Edward Watson as Leontes and Lauren Cuthbertson as Hermione are ideally cast, even if Antigonus is consumed by a wave rather than exiting “pursued by a bear”.

Sir Tim Rice: A Life In Song (BBC2)
Tim Minchin, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Gemma Arterton, Rob Brydon, Laura Mvula and Rufus Wainwright help the great lyricist reminisce about his 40 years writing hit songs for musicals such as Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita and The Lion King. Recorded this summer at London’s Royal Festival Hall.

Royal Institution Christmas Lectures (BBC4)

Only the sixth woman to deliver the prestigious talks in their 189-year history (but the third since 2009), Danielle George, professor of radio frequency engineering at Manchester University, will be explaining “how to hack your home”. Prof George hopes to inspire creative thinking around everyday gadgets such as smartphones and electric motors and to turn them into radical new devices that could change the world.

Top Gear Christmas Special (BBC2)

The special that Jeremy Clarkson and team were filming in Argentina before they got chased out of the country by a mob supposedly enraged by their number plate. We probably won’t see Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond hiding under their researchers’ hotel bed, because the cameras had been ditched by then.

A very good service. I have been using UKTV since the beginning and before it was taken over by Expat TV.

I still use the original UKTV player because it is far more flexible than the Expat TV version. Firstly the program guide is easier and better to use, but for me, more importantly there is a much better record facility with the UKTV player. You can simply go to any program(s) broadcast over the past week and press record. You can also record several programs at the same time to watch at your leisure in the future. With the Expat TV Player version you can only record the program you are actually watching. You can't record one program and watch another.

The UKTV player is still available. Simply email Expat TV and ask for the link to download it and they will send it to you.

The mobile app is available. This is the reply I received from them when I inquired:

You can download the app here: https://www.thaiexpat.tv/dl/android/TETVBeta5.apk

username: same username

password: same password

If the app does not work on your device you will need to use the mobile web player: m.eplayer.asia - we would recommend the software players for Windows and Mac computers as the mobile web player has no built in buffer.

For me the APP doesn't work but 'm.eplayer.asia' works fine. As they say though, there is no buffering facility using the m.eplayer.asia connection so if the internet connection you're using is unstable or slow you might get intermittent freezing etc.

Thanks for your extra info -- most useful :) I signed up for the free trial and fired up m.eplayer.asia and logged in chose BBC1 news for testing it and was presented with a streamed file called " playlist.m3u8 " which does not seem to play in vlc. Any suggestions?

I left the UK to get away from this garbage. Can I have a free food voucher for Door 2 Door Pattaya instead?

Strange. I left the UK to get away from that sort of garbage food.

Door 2 Door sells every type of food in the world. You should try it sometime.

if all you want is UK Free to air and have android get filmon.tv as its free tv from all over the world. So good in fact, two British friends have dumped True for this free App. Its not perfect but I have yet to see a low cost reliable connection in Thailand.

I have a 3BB 13 Mb connection but find weekends its very slow so purchased an android box for 3K to trial it and it works fine.

If anyone has a cheap way to get NRL then would like to hear about it.

Not sure what you've got.

When I log on to m.eplayer.asia I get the web page m.eplayer.asia/channels/tv#main with eighteen icons showing each available channel (I don't subscribe to their extra premium channels). If I select BBC1 I get another page, m.eplayer.asia/channels/tv#listing and a list of all the BBC1 programs, starting with the most current one. I select a program to watch and a window opens to say 'complete the action using browser, Chrome of VLC'. I normally select VLC and it usually takes about 3-4 seconds to load. (I use VLC as first choice because it defaults to 16:9 mode while the others tend to default to 4:3 mode and need resizing)

on a couple of occasions I've had buffering/freezing with VLC and have selected the Browser or Chrome option and that usually clears the problem.

Just to add I also use their sister 365sport website to watch EPL Football all the time and very rarely do I get a problem with freezing. Again changing to one of the browsers usually cures the problem.

Unfortunately this forum does not have a "facetious" emoticon. If it did I would have used it on my comment.

To put the record straight, Door2Door is a good service for those who want home restaurant food delivery.

Whether using a PC or Andriod FilmOn is certainly a good quality stream BUT there is no 'on demand' option, you can only watch the programs live. With the time difference that's not always a practical option in Thailand. There is a record option but 'again' you can't go back after the program has finished to record it.

For Android users there is another (free) app called 'Lazy Monkey TV'. It uses the filmon programming so there's still no catch up service for any programs you might have missed, but there is an easy record system for upcoming programs. For each channel they list all programs for the next week ahead and you can select the ones you want to record, then play them back at your leisure.

Certainly not as user friendly as Expat TV but it is a free app.

Where can I see a tv listing to see if it is something i might be interested in ..Also how much is the monthly charge ..?

Is it via satellite or Internet?

It's streamed via the internet.

Comes from local servers in Bangkok so, providing you have at least a 3MB internet speed you shouldn't get any buffering.

The cost for the standard package is 600 baht pm and their premium service is 900 baht pm.

All channels have a catch up facility for the previous seven days plus all programs are recordable.

Have a look at ILIKEHD TV 350 baht per month BBC, ITV, SKY SPORTS, MOVIES plus all you can get here as well, on Google play store.

Does it have record and seven day look back?

Not a lot of use if not is it, unless you want to watch daytime tv.

On windows, iLikeHD runs through your browser. i LikeHD is good for the channels local to Thailand. I'm thinking combining this an the expat Tv option could be good value

I did a Google search but couldn't seem to find a site that had information ..which is unusual!

https://secure.ilikehd.com/heimdall-GUI/login.php?lang=en

You need to register with the site in order to gain access to their info... It's free to do, and then if you like, you can subscribe to one of their pay per month packages starting at 300 baht.

There is no recording facility built into their service. But the time issue isn't such a big one with their programming channels, since a lot of them are actually originating from Asia, like the HBO channels, Fox channels, True Movie Hits, etc etc.

Overall, I think ILike HD is very good for English language movie channels and sports, both from the U.S. and Europe. But their regular TV content is much less UK centric, overall, than the UK/Expat TV services. Which might be a good thing -- unless you happen to a Brit. tongue.png

I have downloaded UK/TV trial version and looks very good. I have downloaded it to my desktop Windows 7 and have tried to watch it watch it through my TV, via an HDMI cable. The problem is, that although the picture is perfect, the sound still comes from my computer speakers..Is there anyway to remedy this and have the sound come from my TV.

Thanks for any help.

Try unplugging and plugging the HDMI again. Or when on screen check the sound bar, bottom right. Sometimes you have to change to TV. Same thing happens with mine sometimes!
