Why doesn't thailand banks have electronic chips in their cards like my foreign bank?

It would fix this problem immediately.

I heard that Bangkok Bank introduced smart cards (chipped) some time ago.

SCB must be behind the curve.

I wonder when thailand will get the skimming under control. It's an epidemic.

I'm really considering changing banks. Heard good things about Kasikorn bank and comes highly recommended by friends.

But heard you can only use them in Bangkok Bank ATM's or am I misinformed?

There are two types of ATM cards. One that you can use in any bank's ATM and the other only Bangkok Bank ATMs.

When I had to replace my card that I could use anywhere, it was replaced with the second kind. I actually prefer it as it's safer and I don't get those 20 baht charges.

Loads of Bangkok Bank ATMs around, so, it saves me money.

I've noticd that using another bank's ATM no longer attracts the 20 baht fee.

For me, Kasikorn, it still does attract the 20 Baht fee. The difference is it is not announced on the withdrawal screen anymore, but simply deducted about middle of the following month.

Never seen a charge with Bangkok or SCB cards in other bank ATM. I thought I read that the government (Bank of Thailand) had told the bank to cease making these charges.

Last night tried to withdraw cash from my SCB account but got the message that my atm card was suspended. Went today to the new SCB near Ducati shop on Chao Fa West. Got a new card (no fee). Bank lady asked me if I wanted to change my passbook as it already has several extra pages stapled in but I said no as I was in a hurry, which she was ok with. Really wish SCB would get chipped cards like BB...

The retards reset my withdraw limit back to 20k a day after changing my card. What an inconvenience on a day I have to pay bills and staff.

Back down the bank I go again. Ugh.

For SCB you can just call in to 02-777-7777 (and wade through the voice mail til you get a real operator) to reset your daily limit, don't need to actually go down to the bank.

Thanks. That worked. The banks aren't open today as well.

Just for future ref hans , you can do it yourself at any of there atms too , go through the menu options to increase limit .

You will need your passport number to confirm the limit change , but easy done.

Keep mine at 20k a day ( should i be unfortunate enough to ever get skimmed ) .

But when i need more simply adjust the daily limit ( up to 200k im sure you know ) do the withdrawl and then reset to 20k. ( you can actually make it as low as 1k if you wish )

I didn't know that it could be done via atm.

Quite wise to drop it back down.

Normally I set it at 200k and leave it.

I guess it's time to be a little more diligent.

On second thoughts.

If the skimmers duplicate your card, what to stop them increasing the limit at the ATM before withdrawing?

I actually prefer if it couldn't be done at the ATM.

Maybe the skimmers don't know it can be done.

Regardless where the ATM card comes from - one's home country or Thailand... it is wiser to have two accounts (one or two ATM Cards) at the same bank - not connected by automatic overdraft ... Calculate your pending cash withdraw - move the money to the Account / ATM Card you are going to use - go withdraw it - taking the balance to near zero... The bulk of one's money would be in other accounts - not reachable by an ATM transaction. But of course this does require an online funds internal transfer capability from one account to another. And it is enhanced by having a Mobile Smartphone App.

Works for me - worked today.

That's OK, but don't do it using WiFi. facepalm.gif

I get an SMS every time money goes into or out of my accounts. Costs 20 baht / month. And an email and SMS when my account is logged in.

I've actually left my card in machines twice - didn't lose any money, but cost me 150 baht for each card.

Have any other banks cards been cancelled?

If there had been skimmers, they probably don't care which banks or branches cards have been used.
