Cannot Change My Profile Photo

Featured Replies

I recently changed my profile photo to be the cartoon on the front page of "The Independent" newspaper. It seemed a good idea at the time.

Here it is: http://www.frasercoastchronicle.com.au/news/charlie-hebdo-relentless-islam-says-aussie-cartoon/2505004/

That profile photo was then deleted my metisdead as it broke one or more forum rules.

But now every time I upload a new picture, e.g. js2a.jpg, the Photo Editor window shows the "deleted" cartoon picture:

post-35489-0-54133000-1420741078_thumb.j

The actual photo that I am trying to use as my profile photo is this - js2a.jpg:

post-35489-0-88585500-1420740571_thumb.j

Clearly, whatever metisdead did to delete my profile photo is not working. I often change my photo and have no problems doing it.

So can someone please correctly remove the cartoon "finger" picture so I can upload the new one?

Much obliged.

Your current User Image is the system default.

As for the uploader, it's horribly flawed due to ISP server caching. Just upload new image and post it, whatever appears on the screen may be a mirage.

Also, it may take a while for the new image to be visible to you, again due to ISP image caching.

Thank you for your post, but the symptoms of this problem are not the same as ISP caching.

I have seen the "ISP caching" problem in the past. Sometimes it takes over a week for my new photo to appear next to my posts, as I have reported before:

http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/743426-two-weeks-for-avatar-to-be-updated/?p=8230417&hl=%2Bavatar

But, in the past, the photo editor always showed the newly uploaded picture, and allowed it to be cropped.

Now, the photo editor shows the deleted picture - the one that was deleted by metisdead.

So there is no way I'm going to "upload new image and post it, whatever appears on the screen may be a mirage." knowing that it may NOT be a mirage and may be the picture that upset metisdead.

See the first picture in my original post above. The photo editor is displaying the old, deleted picture even though I just uploaded a new one called "js2a.jpg".

That picture - js2a - is shown in the second picture in my original post.

The only solution may be for my deleted picture to be undeleted, and then for me to delete it, as that has always worked in the past.

had the same problem and in the end gave up.

must be a crap bit of programming, that has never been put right, as changing a photo on any other site is a piece of cake.

I posted an animated gif about six months ago then decided to change it for another.

The uploader then constantly showed the first animated gif, even though I have gone through three others since.

It's an issue of caching somewhere.

Try using another browser to set the image.

If a MOD or ADMIN doesn't respond to your post, try using the "Contact Us" link at the bottom of the page.

That's a good idea - I'll give it a go in a minute. Unfortunately, there is now a power cut so I have to shut everything down before the UPS runs out!

It now appears to have worked in my profile:

- but not jet flushed through all the caches between my PC and the web site.

Please note: my old picture is still sometimes being displayed as my avatar by my PC even though I changed it in my profile:

post-35489-0-91871100-1421041952_thumb.j

So, if you see the old one, it's not my fault!

Edit: Added "sometimes" rolleyes.gif

Because of caching by the ISPs, it takes some time until everybody sees the new image in both places, as your profile picture and as your avatar. The moderators are aware of this issue.

Thanks for that. When I saw the OLD image in the Photo Editor page, even after I successfully uploaded a brand new image, I was loathe to assume that the new image would be my avatar. So I cancelled it.

After another day passed, the new uploaded image was visible in the Photo Editor so I was more confident that the new image would appear everywhere.

  • 1 year later...

After trying for hours with this I changed one thing that worked. All the pics I was trying to upload were named '###.jpg'. As soon as I changed any of them to '###.jpeg' (e.g. insert the 'E'), it worked. So while the format of the picture is the same, the site seems to be 'extension specific'.

JetsetBkk, I now see the animated GIF of an automobile doing a right turn as both your avatar and your profile image. Is that what you currently mean to have? (I guess the "De tout cœur..." avatar got nuked because it contained text in a language other than English)

Yes, the Ford Mustang is the one I want, but I didn't think you could have a different picture (or movie wink.png) for your profile picture and for your avatar. I thought they were the same.

re. the Charlie Hebdo avatars: I think the one with the middle finger coming out of the paper got banned because of the middle finger biggrin.png. I can't remember what happened about the "De tout coeur" one... I think it was there for a while and then I changed it.

One thing for all to note though is that it can take a couple of weeks for the updated avatar image to propagate through all the internet, server, ISP and computer caches that exist between your PC and Thaivisa.

Edit:

How did you get the OE to be displayed as the "minuscule oe" in coeur?

I've tried "" and ALT+0140, without success. And the HTML ASCII code œ

The profile image you upload gets stored on the Thaivisa servers with one name, the avatar created from it with another name. An exception is when you upload an animated GIF, in which case the same file name on the Thaivisa server is used both for profile and avatar. The number in the file name is the member number, which remains unchanged when we change the profile image.

Examples

Maestro: still picture
Avatar: static.thaivisa.com/forum/uploads/profile/photo-thumb-21260.jpg?_r=0
Profile: static.thaivisa.com/forum/uploads/profile/photo-21260.jpg?_r=0
JetsetBKK: animate GIF
Avatar: static.thaivisa.com/forum/uploads/profile/photo-35489.gif?_r=1422640374
Profile: static.thaivisa.com/forum/uploads/profile/photo-35489.gif?_r=1422640374
When my ISP or another intermediary does not refresh the cache of both files at the same time, that's when I temporarily see different images for profile image and avatar for a member after a change of the profile image. Happens all the time.

For œ, on a Windows computer it is Alt+0156

Thanks for the info, but there's a weird condition.

I can see the "minuscule oe" in the text box as a type, but if I post with "BBCode Mode" set off, the "oe" does not appear on the web page.

If I post with "BBCode Mode" set on, then it does appear on the web page.

Here is with BBCode Mode on: cœur

And here is above post quoted with BBCode Mode off.

I am using Windows 7 and Chrome 48 and do not have this problem.

These Alt+ character codes do not necessarily work will all applications, with all browsers. You have to remember that the Bulletin Boards go back to the time long before there was the worldwide web and HTML and Windows and what have you, when the available character set ended at hex 7F (decimal 127). The fact that some computer operating systems and/or keyboard drivers and/or application programs let us use keyboard shortcuts for characters above hex 7F is to accomodate the newer generations.

Interesting stuff! As long as I remember to turn on BBCode Mode (not my preferred condition) I should be OK to insert the odd characters: Œ œ .

No, it is with BBCode off that the Alt+<code> works.

BBCode off

BBCode on

The formatting codes enclosed by square brackets, in the above example the code for bold text, are BBCodes.

Yes, sorry, I got that round the wrong way. rolleyes.gif

BBCode Mode On means you must enter BBCodes to get the effect, and

BBCode Mode Off means you can click on the appropriate icon, or enter the code by typing.

BBCode Mode On:

post-35489-0-42293700-1456235427_thumb.j

BBCode Mode Off:

post-35489-0-26519400-1456235445_thumb.j

So it must be OFF to get the ALT+code to work.

Think I'll save this thread as a reminder for the future. wink.png

I too have been unsuccessful changing my cover photo. Once I contacted "admin" and they made it happen. But still I have great difficulty changing to another picture. I don't think this ought to be that difficult.

It's usually an issue with an upstream ISP Gateway or your browser caching the image.  Mods will usually suggest making the change then waiting 24 hours for all the cache servers to clear.

If you have a VPN connection handy then after making a change you can enable the VPN and see if the change took.

Othertimes, you'll need to contact support @ thaivisa . com and ask them, because.

This is what I currently see as your profile image and avatar:

To what new image would you like to change it?
