YALA: -- THREE Border Patrol Police were wounded by a roadside bomb in Yala province yesterday, hours after a civilian was shot and wounded. The attacks were thought to have been committed by insurgents.

Insurgents also fired on two security outposts in Yi Ngor and Bacho districts in Narathiwat province yesterday, but caused only property damage.

In the Yala incident, the three |officers were travelling on two motorcycles to patrol an area near a unit |in Muang district, before they were hit by the blast, set off from 15 kilograms of explosives contained in a gas |cylinder buried by the road.

The three were being treated in hospital but not seriously injured.

Police said later that a civilian was shot on Monday night at a location not far from the site of the bomb. So it was likely that insurgents wanted to draw police to the scene in order to attack them with the roadside bomb.

In Narathiwat, two gunmen on a motorcycle fired on Task Force 32 headquarters in Bacho district on Monday evening in a drive-by shooting before fleeing after soldiers returned fire. Task Force 32 was targeted after its men killed 13 insurgents in a well-known and well-planned ambush last year.

Insurgents also fired on a security outpost in Yi Ngor district on Monday evening, but a team of police inspected the site to assess damage yesterday morning instead of in the evening, in order to avoid possible ambushes by another group of insurgents.

Also in Yala, security officials sealed off three locations in Bannang Sata and arrested three men, described as high-profile suspects reportedly trained by foreign terror group Runda Kumpulan Kecil and wanted on nine arrest warrants between them.

The men are identified as Matorhe Sile, Saudi Ding-u-seng and Mahama Mamidong. They are in military custody and being questioned.

What always floors me about Thai news is the utter lack of follow up. What ever happened to the volunteer army man who shot a little boy, and then placed a gun in his hand to justify the homicide? I am very sure we will never read a follow up on that story or this story either.
