Transgender model appeals to NHRC over alleged ban from pub

BANGKOK: -- TRANSGENDER model Nijshanaaj "Sarina Thai" Sudlarphaar yesterday filed a complaint with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) over an alleged ban on transgenders at a pub in Bangkok's Royal City Avenue (RCA).

Accompanied by Thai Transgender Alliance president and Thammasat University's public health lecturer Ronnapoom Samakkeekarom, Sarina submitted the petition to NHRC chairperson Amara Pongsapich and NHRC member Dr Taejing Siripanich about the club's alleged discrimination against transgenders.

Sarina claimed she and four foreign friends went to the club on New Year's Day but the security guards, who let her friends in, denied her entry on grounds she was a transgender. She said she felt humiliated and that she and others in the alliance decided to file the petition to try to bring social change and gender equality.

Ronnapoom said this was a violation of consumer rights, adding that more than 10 night entertainment venues, health spas or hotels in Bangkok and other provinces had bans on transgenders. "Some hotels in Chon Buri's Pattaya City and Phuket put up signs prohibiting guests from bringing in a dog, a durian or a transgender," he said.

Ronnapoom said some Bangkok security guards claimed such bans had become policy ub some places because some transgenders had stolen items from customers or provided sex services at the venues. "Those claims should not be a reason to generalise that all transgenders would do [such things]."

Ronnapoom said the National Legislative Assembly had approved a draft law on gender equality and, after being announced in the Royal Gazette, discrimination against transgenders would be punishable by a jail term or a fine. There would also be a fund to aid victims.

Ronnapoom urged victims to, besides avoiding places that banned them, file police complaints or share their experiences online to stop this from being a social norm.

Ronnapoom said he hoped the NHRC would help them. A similar case in 2007 resulted in a Bangkok hotel apologising for such action and vowing not to do it again. He said the group also hoped the NHRC could ask the government to set clear regulations to stop discrimination in the future. Amara said such treatment should not take place in Thailand and the NHRC would look into the case.

Taejing said the commission would summon the pub's executives soon for information and cited many alleged discriminatory practices, such as denial of hotel service to people living with HIV, a ban of transgenders entering nightclubs, as well as making fun of their identity.

Taejing said bosses sometimes denied setting discriminatory policies - while employees confirmed them. So there was a need to summon all parties to bring mutual understanding.

A few years ago I went to a club in Australia when it was my sons 21st, the club refused me entry because I was an older person. So we went to one down the road and spent our money there! Sure I could have made an issue of the first club....but why bother. All up the party crowd including myself spent about $20k and we had a lot of fun!

This is rubbish, where ever there are humans there is crime, lets say-- men, women, Thai, English Indian,Muslim, cahtolic christian, black, white, bloody green if you wish. Why would this person be a threat? Transgender , model or not, in this country and the everyday goings on I really can't see the problem here. The Pub is wrong...........

Maybe...just Maybe.....The pub owner knows something we don't ??

Hurt feelings have nothing to do with an establishment's right to cater to any clientele they wish. Many places do not allow certain foreigners or any foreigners at all for that matter. I do not hear foreigners making a big suckus about it. Just suck it up and go elsewhere where one will be welcome. Why would anyone wish to knowingly be a nuisance in a place and sit there all evening getting lousy service and brooding glares?

People need to grow up and move on. No one is complaining about this man's choice to appear like a woman and engage in those benefits. It seems hypocritical that this man is complaining about other people's rights that he, himself, is enjoying... but won;t respect others to enjoy.

Apparently there are transgender extremists and transgender moderates and the vast majority are moderates who do not speak out against the extremists...

(excuse my religious pun...)

Sometimes I find it hard to spot a "transgender", especially after dusk, so the pub's bouncer must have very good trans-dar.

If you are interested in some serious TeeGee spotting, apparently the Nana Hotel car park is a favorite gathering place. Large herds of them can be seen after dusk, interspersed with the more common but smaller bodied Bee Gees. They are all there waiting to pounce on the bumbling Great White, large bellied Farang which are found in greater numbers across the road at the watering holes.

Good spotting old chap!thumbsup.gif

Well you learn something new every day, apparently the collective term for ladyboys is "a herd".

Thanks for the info ratcatcher ;-)

Privately owned and operated I guess they fell they can admit whomever they wish

This is a very valid point.

I'm thinking back many decades, many, to when I started drinking in pubs, legally of course, and the situation was quite clear that the publican could refuse entry / service to whomever he wanted. Then came sex equality and some pubs tried to delay the inevitable by saying their toilets weren't suitable for ladies but they were told. to upgrade or lose their licences.

Then came PC and i have no idea how things are now. Does anyone know how such things work in LoS ?

You are welcome and I believe the collective term for bar girls (BGs) is "gaggle", because in a large group there is a lot of squawking and screeching going on.

I appreciate the banning of dogs, and cats, for that matter, in hotels, and durian does smell. But I think the transgender person, man or woman, should not be disallowed entry into a venue just because of their sexual orientation. How did the bouncer know she was transgender anyway?

You saw the picture above right?

If you can't tell that's a bloke in a dress from 100 paces, then consider visiting an Optometrist.

In Austria complete ski towns were off limits for Swedish...too much troubles when they are drunk. Of course complete bizarre if you ban an average Swedish family who may not even drink alcohol because of the troubles with others. But I would say it is the right of the bar to choose who they serve.

You can't force someone to serve...that is even worse.

"Some hotels in Chon Buri's Pattaya City and Phuket put up signs prohibiting guests from bringing in a dog, a durian or a transgender"

Never seen this sign on my travels, but I am sure it must exist if the article says so.

Dogs are a pest in hotels due to hygiene and barking, durian does stink the place

out and 'transgender' types are a mix of them both. Print more of these signs, I say.

This forum never seems to amazed me with how low we can get ...

But then again, those that protest overtly in public are the ones that wank off to ladyboy porn in privacy. I think there was a similar study done on anti-gay people that points to this.

What's so low about that?

He's only saying it.

Everybody is thinking it.

I'm not.

Probably from his/her ID card!

"She said she felt humiliated and that she and others in the alliance decided to file the petition to try to bring social change and gender equality."

Throwing around the word gender in this situation is a misnomer.

There are but two genders.

It has nothing to do with some guy shoving cancerous silicone in his chest and Botox in his face.

And it's disingenuous to those who truly fight for gender equality.

The bouncer knew because he has eyes in his head. Did you not see the photo of him?

She's hot and Id rather look at her than most of the old, fat, wrinkled, bald headed antagonistic TV members who are so quick to judge people from behind their computer keyboards. Edited by 2fishin2
