I run a small bar in the north of Samui, and I have a Bar maid working for me for the last couple of months who is just a great girl and a great friend (I've known her for 5 years).

About a week ago her son, who lives with her Ma and pa in Issan, fell sick with a stomach problem of some seriousness. She has no money to send to the familly to get him treated, and so she's been Wai-ing Phra every day praying for the survival of her son. Unfortunately none of her friends has any money, including me, so no help there. The doctors in her home town told the parents to take the lad to BKK to a good hospital for treatment and possibly an opperation. Of course she's been sick with worry, and on Sunday evening did the Thai thing of getting absolutely shitefaced. I had to close at eleven, and send her and her two mates home.

Of course all my customers noticed this over the week, and all of them know the problem she has re. her son's health.

Last night, one of my customers who is a long term tourist,, and female, asked me if 1000 quid was enought to help the Son, so I said yes thinking it was an empty alcohol induced remark. She said she couldn't get that sort of money out the ATM last night, but would give it in the morning (today).

She then went to the ATM and got out 20,000 Baht, came straight back and gave it to my Bar maid, who broke down in tears and hugged our generous friend until she was red in the face!! I too was overcome with emotion and tears welled up in my eyes too. In all my 19 years in Thailand, or indeed anywhere else, I've never seen this, and it just goes to show that the milk of human kindness still exists.

My barmaid sent the money home this morning and they're on their way to BKK. She asked me to let her in at 3 am tonight to Tambon and wai Buddha here in the bar to give thanks, so it looks like we won't be sleeping tonight. She hasn't been able to get home to see her son for 2 years, so I'm trying to get her on a plane to BKK in the next few days....flights are full though.

Incidently, the young lady who did this hails from Bonnie Scotland. God bless her....!!

Please don't go cinical on me, this was truly fabulous, and I had to tell someone!

Nice act of generosity.

Did you also make a contribution?

I've lent her quite a bit over the last 2 months as she was broke and had nowhere to live. That's all sorted now and she was just getting back on her feet again. So I already did a bit of contributing, and am now broke myself....I gave her 14500 Baht over this time, which she doesn't have to give back. I'm happy with that.

Well I think you've done your fair share.

I thought there was some kind of THB 30 health scheme in Thailand.

More 'wai-ing phra' and less 'getting shitefaced' though is my investment advice to her.

Don't get me wrong, She hasn't had a drink of alcohol since Buddhist lent started, it was just a one off the other night coz of a build up of her problem...it's a thing Thai's do often, as well as some Farangs!!

Just goes to show the old myth of the Scots being tight fisted is just that - A MYTH!! :o

Papa,

I think if you read the original post the doctor in Isan suggested to go to a better hospital in Bkk, maybe they didn't have a specialist for this kids problem and he only said maybe surgery, as for the 30bt scheme that's what you get 30bt worth. I'm sure you will forward a contribution

As they say...It costs nothing to be nice... :D

But it just shows the value of money in the West...The price of a few night's out on the piss...could save a kids life... :o

A "bar maid"? Is that supposed to be the politically correct term?

Steverino owns a bar but has no money? Uh…and after 19 years here? Jesus!

Oh right, he gave her 14,500 over two months, which he is happy about. Is that over her salary? Is she paid 1,000 baht a month as is the norm here in Lamai and the rest is to be gained from customers?

"Please don't go cinical (sic) on me, this was truly fabulous, and I had to tell someone!"

Sorry, but you should know being in Thailand that even though you have "known her for five years," it is hard to know just where the truth of this lies and the exaggeration begins. It doesn't take 19 years to understand that lying, embellishing the facts and omission of information is a hallmark here. Did the doctor who said to send him to a better facility know what he was talking about? What is the condition of the youth?

If it is all true then fine, but a tourist giving 20K to a bargirl's sick son smacks of chumming for suckers to me. As I say, if it is all true fine and good; have you verified any of this or are you taking everything at face value, meaning accepting everything this Thai bargirl says?

I am curious why she had no money and you, a business person, also has no money. Are you ready to declare bankruptcy? How much money does the youth need for whatever unknown condition?

Some details would fill out the story.

Jeez Louise...

Firstly, I´d like to point out, that the O.P. posted this, precisely BECAUSE it is so rare to see acts like this.

I recently had a bind, and a fellow tv member who´s never met me and lives far far away from me helped me out financially. And I could recount dozen´s of other tales.

It´s the extraordinary surprise of being in a situation where you can see NO WAY OUT and there you are, up against a brick wall, and suddenly someone opens a hidden door and beyond there are luscious fields of green.

That´s the feeling here, and if you´ve never encountered it in your life, I should say, get back to the roots man, cos it still exists.

As for runniong a bar, and not having any money, I think I may be the tv.commer most eligible to testify that this is entirely feasible (pardon the intended pun). You drink all the best, leave the happy hours take care of the rest.

I may be being presumtious here, but you´re prob the type of guy who´calculates to the thiord decimal how much tip you leave, and only if you can´t get away without leaving a tip.

Prob also the type of guy who orders only happy hours, or the cheapest possible crap.

Quality, not quantity.

For 19 years he´s been running his bar on a beautiful subtropical island. So what if he has no money? He´s had 19 years in a place where money can´t buy something like that.

I hope top be able to say the same, and you know what, in nineteen years maybe one of my waitresses will have a problem. Or maybe someone, could be you or someone like me - is staying there and has a brain aneurism. This just happened actually to a client of my bar.

And you know what, that guy was lucky to have moneyless friends here, who tried and managed to find a way to raise money to help the guy. Who later paid us all back.

I´m picturing you on the 75th floor of a skyscraper somewhere.

Please disillusion me.

If I were to give you an answer regarding my own situation it would give you and/or everyone else a big clue to who I am, as I am quite well known on the island and there are a few good reasons why I haven't any money etc after being here 19 years. I wanted to keep this impersonal so people didn't come down to see me and my bar maid (who is not a bar girl by the way!) and bother the donor and the recipient. As for this bar where I'm working now, I am only the manager, so I'm on a salery, pay tax etc etc. I have every faith in my friends situation re. her son, and am happy to report there are more than a few very good Thai people around. Perhaps the circles you move in don't permit you to meet any of them, as your posting smacks of farang complacency, distrust and arrogance.

Lets hope one day something good'll happen to you and your faith in our hosts will be renewed.

Well I think you've done your fair share.

I thought there was some kind of THB 30 health scheme in Thailand.

More 'wai-ing phra' and less 'getting shitefaced' though is my investment advice to her.

So is the lad going private now eg Bumrungrad or BNH?

Because if he goes to a public hospital in Isaan, emergency surgery will surely be provided for a modest fee.

both your posts are full of it. the 30 baht health scheme is just that, a 'scheme'

emergency surgery.....public Issan hospital.......modest fee..... :o
