PM visit to Japan brings positive impacts on Thai tourism

BANGKOK, 12 February 2015 (NNT) - Tourism and Sports Minister Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul has stated that the Prime Minister’s official visit to Japan appeared to have a positive impact on Thailand’s tourism.

She said that Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe expressed confidence in the capacity of Thai tourism during his bilateral meeting with Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha. Ms. Kobkarn claimed that the statement would encourage Japanese tourists to visit Thailand in 2015.

The Tourism and Sports Minister met with Chairman of the Long Stay Foundation Ryuji Funayama, in order to discuss Japanese long-stay tourism. Mr. Funayama revealed that more than 1.2 million Japanese were long-stay tourists worldwide, a figure that is expected to grow in the near future. Roughly 4,000 out of 60,000 long-stay Japanese in Thailand prefer to reside in Chiang Mai.

The Minister has planned to meet with the Board of Investment (BOI) to promote long-stay tourism. The strategy is aimed at boosting the country’s competitiveness against Malaysia, which has clear industry policies. The BOI meeting would also discuss promoting foreign investment in Thai tourism.

Regarding the planned termination of the Bangkok-Madrid flight route by Thai Airways, Ms. Kobkarn revealed that a meeting with the airline’s board would discuss marketing support from the government. The Thai Airways meeting is scheduled on February 26.
