'Car bomb' a govt ploy, ex-security chief alleges

Government critic Prasong Soonsiri said yesterday that the arrest of a man allegedly driving a car laden with explosives near caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's home was set up to give the government the opportunity to declare a state of emergency and uproot political opponents.

Prasong said it was an obvious set-up due to conflicting evidence given by witnesses. Circumstantial evidence also made it unbelievable that this was a real assassination attempt on Thaksin, he said.

Prasong, a former National Security Council secretary-general, said the "bomb" had not been assembled and that the military official who was arrested was an administrative soldier who knew nothing about it [making bombs].

"The set-up was timed to coincide with the rumours spread by the Thai Rak Thai Party over the past month," he said.

He said that Thaksin did not trust the Internal Security Operation Command deputy director, General Pallop Pinmanee, because Pallop was protecting Chamlong Srimuang, a leader of the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD), and a long-time friend.

Prasong said that Thaksin's dismissal of Pallop and his attempts to interfere with the military reshuffle might cause a confrontation between him and the military.

Prasong warned that the political situation was reaching breaking point after Thaksin announced he would wipe out his political opponents after the general election.

"The set-up of the 'car bomb' plot may lead to the declaration of a state of emergency. Incidents like these can be handled without passing through normal legal procedures," he said.

PAD coordinator Suriyasai Katasila also said it was possible that the "car bomb" was a state set-up because police gave conflicting and suspicious statements.

Today's events were obviously fabricated to garner the impression that "dark forces" were insidiously attempting to overthrow a "democratically" elected leader and his government.

Thaksin's increasingly running scared......scared about holding onto his ill-gotten wealth....his position in TRT.....about the continuance of his position as the premier.

He knows NOW that he has determined enemies everywhere, in positions that count, that are resolute in their cause to overthrow him (including the armed services and IMHO approx. 80-90 per cent of the military are now vehemently opposed to him.)

These are, indeed, very dangerous times for Thaksin!

His only recourse is to engineer conflict and violence and confronatation and enmity and a state of emergency which will give him a mandate to do what the hel_l he wants under the protection of an umbrella called a 'state of emergency'.

Before the end of the year expect a hastily gathered mass of hundreds of deluded Thaksin supporters descending on an anti-Thaksin rally and it's peaceful supporters.

Within the next few days, you can expect more TRT members to jump ship and police officers to come out in the open and reveal the hidden truth behind all of these fabrications. Many have had enough and probably already feared for their own lives and/or carrers before today. He will soon have to face the fact that his money can't buy everyone and everything forever. I say the carpet will swiftly be pulled from under his feet faster that he can say Shincorp. He will not be allowed to go that far. Unlike other coups, this one will be surprisingly fast and clean. The Suwhanabhumi airport couldn't fit all those who deserve and should be swept along with him.

This is all surreal, I think I may start to charge for my analysis. SJ I think you can save time and edit my posts and not the Nations as mine seem to be first and the same. The Nation did go more in depth and depending on how the Thai papers cover this story, Thaksin’s plan “B” assassination attempt may also go down in flames. However I am sure he will play this up to the max.

The fact that this may have given Thaksin leverage to un-shuffle the military shift was an interesting concept that is still clearly on the table. I also see this as a similar chain of events before the southern super powers were given to Thaksin to deal with the problems there. So use that as a clue to watch for his next action. Thaksin appears to be a creature of habit. If it worked before it will work again.

Dammed cheap driver at just 200 baht........I canna get much organised for even 500 Baht these days and certainly not a car being driven about BKK with potentionally dangerous explosives.

For most of us farangs, this triumvirate between between religion, military & politics, all overseen by the revered monachy, seems so utterly confusing to us. Then you have Toxin's class 7 of the cops which are all being moved into leading posts etc. Well I am 7000km from the LOS but most anxious for the way the cards are finally going to fall. Think of Marcos, Shah of Iran, Ida Amin and that ilk and now Toxin where is this all gonna finish? This is all so so sad.

It is said a country gets the goverment it deserves but another round of this Micky Mouse farce is all to much for the average sweet Thais to whom I lost my heart to over 20 years ago!

Explosives found in car near Thaksin's residence

The dismissal of a senior army officer after the arrest of a man in connection with the discovery of explosive materials in a car parked near the residence of caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra yesterday kicked off a fierce debate. Many observers found it hard to believe Mr Thaksin's contention that he had narrowly escaped an assassination attempt. One reason for the scepticism is the connections of Gen Panlop Pinmanee, who Mr Thaksin quickly sacked as deputy director of the Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC). The general, from Class 7 of the Chulachomklao Royal Military Academy, is known to be close to Maj-Gen Chamlong Srimuang, a key leader of the People's Alliance for Democracy, which is campaigning to oust Mr Thaksin.

Also working against Mr Thaksin's assertion are the circumstances of the alleged plot.

The police general said he learned that the bomb, containing 14.23 pounds (6.5 kilograms) of a combination of TNT and C-4 composite explosive as well as a type of 64.57 blasting agent, was ready to go off. He said he did not know who was behind the possible assassination plot.

Metropolitan Police Bureau commissioner Lt-General Wiroj Jantharangsee said the explosives in the sedan were completely assembled, equipped with a remote unit sensor and ready to be detonated, and that it would have a radius of impact of around one kilometre.

That is about 3 square kilometres, Wow, quite a bomb ! Are we sure it wasn't nuclear ?

A police team later searched Thawatchai's own home in Nonthaburi's Bang Bua Thong district and found no illegal items. A Thai Rak Thai Party blazer was found there.

So clearly a PAD-inspired event, then. God preserve the acting caretaker PM from his friends & political-supporters.

A police barricade was set up around the car and a large crowd was herded away to a 400-metre radius from where it was parked. A team of police ordnance experts were called in to examine the car. They neutralised some of the explosives on the front passenger seat by using a high-powered water gun to disassemble what appeared to be cloth bags with something inside.

Keep the crowds well within range of the device ... that makes sense, NOT.

Police discovered later that the sedan's licence plate Thor Santhan-Chor Ching 3085 BKK was registered to a woman and had already been classified void. An investigation was underway to find out how the invalid licence plates came to be attached to the car and what the car's body serial number, which had been scratched out, was.

At a press conference later on, the officer displayed a number of items he said were retrieved from the sedan. Explosives-related items included TNT sticks weighing 10.73 pounds in total, a number of C-4 explosive sticks weighing 3.5 pounds and a combination of blasting agents identified as Anfo (ammonium nitrate-fuel oil) contained in 13 lubricant plastic cans.

Wiroj said such types of explosives were the same as those used in terror bomb attacks in the restive South by insurgents, and that the impact would have been massive. "Nobody within the lethal radius of 30-40 metres would have survived and buildings within the range would be destroyed completely, including the flyover," he said.

And yet another version of the 'truth'.

The officer said it was possible the car was intended to attack the motorcade of Thaksin, which regularly uses the route to take him from his home in nearby Charansanitwong Soi 69 to Government House.

A former owner of the car which was found loaded with explosives and parked near the residence of the prime minister told police late Thursday night that he had sold it to a used car dealer in February.

Suwaroj Prempromwong, 42, told investigators at the Crime Suppression Division that he sold his Daewoo car to a used car dealer in Thonburi in February for Bt85,000.

Sources said the dealer sold the car away on Tuesday.

Police would Friday summon the dealer to testify about his customer who bought the car.

Car owner detained, insists his innocence

The owner of the car found parked outside the premier's residence with explosives was detained by Crime Suppression Division police early Friday morning.

Police took Sukij Rianwilaikul to be questioned at the CSD head office at 2:30 am.

Sukij claimed that he drove his car to a registration office to renew his car registration but the machine broke down at the spot.

He claimed he parked the car there and went to fetch mechanics to fix it.

He said he did not know how the explosives get into his car.

He said he bought the car from a used car dealer in Tha Phra area for over Bt70,000.

Police on duty at the Crime Suppression Division are closely monitoring the army officer arrested Thursday related to the alleged bomb plot to kill the premier for fear that he might try to commit suicide.

Police at the CSD head office checks Lt Thawatchai Klinchana, 43, every 15 minutes.

Thawatchai was arrested when he was about to get into a car carrying explosive devices near the home of caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra on Thursday.

BOT Governor: Investors’ confidence not affected by the recent bomb incident

Governor of Bank of Thailand M.R. Pridiyathorn Devakula is confident that the bombing incident near the residence of Caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra will not affect the confidence of the investors.

He has urged the media to report the news according to the facts as overstating may cause negative impacts to the country.

Whereas, Secretary to the Board of Investment of Thailand Sathit Chanchaokul(สาธิต ชาญเชาว์นกุล) said that the incident would affect the confidence of Thai investors rather than foreign investors.

He believes the confidence of internal investors would be restored and the investment from foreign investors would increase once the situation is eased.

BANGKOK: -- The aborted assassination attempt on Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra on Thursday has both direct and indirect impacts on the Thai economy, according to a top banker.

Prasarn Trairattanaworakul, President of KASIKORN Bank (KBANK), said the arrest of a suspect for a failed car bomb near a residence of the Thai premier had fuelled the political uncertainties and caused direct and indirect effects on the country's economy.

Directly, the country’s administration has been affected since there is still a doubt whether the general election will be held in mid October as scheduled.

Indirectly, the incident has caused the private sector to slow investment and spending, and fuelled the political tension.

He conceded that Thai politics is more sensitive than those of neighboring countries.

So, it is likely that foreign capital will flow directly into Thailand’s rivals instead, including Vietnam, which could have an impact on the Thai economy in the next 5-10 years.

Sathit Charnchavakul, Secretary-General of the Board of Investment of Thailand, said the incident caused mounting concerns and must be closely monitored whether it would escalate or not.

Should the incident escalate, he said, it would definitely affect the country's investment prospect.

Bank of Thailand (BOT)’s Governor M.R. Pridiyathorn Devakula said, however, that the incident would not affect the investment.

However, he said he did not want to give any comment on the matter.

Instead, he wanted to call on the media not to present news reports on the incident in an overreacting manner.

ITV reported that the vehicle was driven back and forth near Thaksin's residence and a security guard of the prime minister urged police to chase and stop it.

And who knows what the facts are? The suspect has been driving his car whole morning. The car was found parked. Police stopped the car. The suspect was arrested when he approached the car to open it and drive. The car owner abandoned the car when it broke down. There were two sticks of dynamite and sacks of fertiliser. There was C4, dynamite, fertiliser soaked in oil, and sandbags. Sandbags were arranged to direct the explosion towards the motorcade. Dynamite was found in the cabin. There was a bomb made of combination of C4 and dynamite. C4 was found in the trunk. There also was 65.74 blasting agent. There were no detonators. There were two primers in the trunk. The bomb was ready to go off. There was an electronic circuit under drivers seat.

It's all so lame....

By reading you Heng, it's possible to foresee the "exit strategy" that Thaksin could take : "it's the south".

But you seem to forget the dozen of versions that were given by authorities since yesterday morning. Nothing is straight. Plus did a good recall of it in his previous post.

Even by thai standards regarding "factual informations", we have reached an extraordinary peak with the yesterday events.

I mean : if it was a "real" attempt, we would have had... let's say, 2 differents versions.

You keep yourself in the classic scheme : it can not be TRT, nor PAD. So, a third party like south would be perfect.

I've another idea : it was a set up by security services, working for Thaksin, but they have failed ! They wanted the car to blow off (much more "graphic" images for TV, greater impact).

Tighter security measures at Government House

Police officers stationed at the Government House are intensifying their inspections on vehicles and individuals who are visiting the site.

The security in the Government House today is particularly stringent today. Vehicles without an authorized sticker, including press members’ cars, are not permitted to enter the building. Besides, vehicles with an authorized sticker can only enter and exit Gate 5 of the venue, which is located opposite of the Ministry of Education. Police officers are meticulously searching for suspicious items in vehicles and individuals who are visiting the Government House. The traffic congestion nearby the location this morning was unusually heavy as a consequence.

A police who looks over Gate 5 of the Government House admitted that the high-level officials have ordered him to keep in mind of those who are traveling nearby the venue. The security plan will also be adjusted in the future, and the plan is being considered at the moment.

Meanwhile, only the Prime Minister and high-level officials’ vehicles can enter and exit Gate 1. The tighter security measures at the Government House are still being implemented for an indefinite period. However, people at the building said such measures have been used for a long time already, not only at this period of time.

Bomb is a plot to bring down Thai government: defence minister

BANGKOK : Thailand's defence minister said Friday that a powerful bomb found near Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's home was part of a plot to bring down the government.

Police defused a potent mix of TNT, plastic explosives, fertilisers and gasoline found Thursday in the trunk of a car at an intersection near Thaksin's home, which they said was a foiled attempt to kill the prime minister.

An army officer was arrested shortly after the bomb was found and charged with illegal possession of explosives, prompting Thaksin to sack a top general.

"There is a movement to bring the government to collapse and to kill the government's leader," Defence Minister General Thammarak Isarangkun told reporters Friday.

"These people aim to take the power to lead the country," he said.

Thammarak said intelligence agents had been investigating the plot for some time.

Security officials have warned since late June that they were looking into intelligence reports that unknown forces were plotting to kill the billionaire premier, whose controversial rule sparked months of street protests earlier this year.

"If any soldiers did it, we will punish them and the army will take care of this matter."

General Panlop Pinmanee, the deputy chief of the powerful Internal Security Operations Command who Thaksin sacked on Thursday, denied any involvement.

"If I had done it, I guarantee that the prime minister wouldn't have survived," he told reporters.

The bomb was found as campaigning officially began for general elections set for October 15, the second national polls this year.

Thaksin's security had already been beefed up ahead of elections, following scuffles between his supporters and groups opposing his rule.

The polls are meant to end months of political turmoil in Thailand, but the discovery of the bomb drew worries about how deep the tensions run.

"It also gives the impression that not only has the country's political system been weakened but the rule of law, which is the main pillar of democracy, has also been eroded," the Nation newspaper wrote in an editorial.

Thaksin, 57, survived months of street protests earlier this year demanding his resignation.

He called snap elections in April to end the protests.

His party won, but the victory was undermined by an opposition boycott.

The courts invalidated the results and set the stage for the new polls in October.

The officials of the Crime Suppression Division have taken the suspect, who hid explosives in a vehicle nearby Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra’s residence yesterday, to prison so he can have a rest, following the intensive interrogation throughout last night.

First Lieutenant Thawatchai Klinchana (ธวัชชัย กลิ่นชนะ), the suspected driver who possessed explosive materials, is not permitted to leave the special detention room, which is located on the upper level of the Crime Suppression Division building. He is now handcuffed and wearing a yellow shirt and white shorts.

Officials have not reveal when another round of interrogation will start again, and they are discussing this issue at the moment. However, the suspect will be imprisoned at the Criminal Court this afternoon before he will return to the Crime Suppression Division later on.

Last night, Mr. Sukrit Riangwilai (สุกฤษ เรียงวิไล), a 60-year-old man who is the owner of the Daewoo vehicle with a powerful bomb yesterday, showed himself at the police station. Mr. Sukrit insisted that he was uninvolved with the bomb plot, and his car was actually broken down even though the vehicle was bought only a couple of days ago.

Did you see last night general Panlop on TV ?

Oh my... he was "emotional"... shocked... and full of anger.

He must have been really taken by surprise.

And can you imagine the blow to his status ? I mean usually in Thailand, if a inferior fxxx up, who is going to blame his superior ? And if really a boss makes a big mistake, he will be assigned to another position.

But with Panlop, it was american style : "you're fired. Don't forget to clean your office before leaving".

Anyway. My point is : Panlop must be now very, very angry... Would it be possible for him to seek revenge by making public some really tasty informations... regarding the struggle in the south for instance ?

He was in charge... He must know some really dirty stuff... That could be a threat to Thaksin.
