Jarat Rattanarat, 64, admitted to killing 21-year- old Weerawat Tiangnoy.

PHUKET: -- A Phuket gardener was arrested early this morning (February 23) after he attacked two men with a machete who were trying to steal roosters from his garden. One of the men died and the other had to run for his life.

At 01.20am, Kathu investigator, Lt Col Anukul Noogate, was called to investigate the death of a 21-year-old man who had been hacked with a machete in Soi Prabaramee 7 on Kalim hill.

Police arrived at a vegetables and fruit orchard on a dirt road off of the Kalim-Kamala Rd about three kilometre from Kamala Beach and found the suspect Jarat Rattanarat, 64, standing with his wife waiting for police to arrive.

Police were led to the body of 21-year- old Weerawat Tiangnoy, a Patong resident, who had suffered a large slash to his neck. He was lying in a bush near a chicken coop and had a six foot skythe in his hand.

Kathu Superintendent, Lt Col Chaiyawat Uykam came to the incident scene to collect crime scene information and later escorted Jarat, who admitted to the killing, to Kathu police station.

Jarat told police he has been hired by a Phuket investor to take care of the garden and orchard for at least for 10 years, and that he raises roosters and hens in the garden.

“I have recently noticed that some of my roosters and hens were missing.

“At first my wife and I thought it was a snake that took the roosters so for the last three days I have hidden and waited to catch the snake.

“However, this morning I caught the two men trying to steal my rooster. I demanded the rooster be returned but the victim responded by trying to hack me with a skythe so I defended myself with a machete,” said Jarat.

Weerawat was slashed twice on the neck and was killed instantly. His accomplice ran away into the woods in panic police were told.

Jarat said he told his wife, Pensri Plagsakul, 60, that he had killed the rooster thief, so she told the land owner about the incident and contacted the police.

Sorry boys, you played with fire and you lost.

The old gent was indeed a cut above the two thieves (no pun intended really) sorry no sympathy for them.

They no doubt would have had no qualms about setting about the old fellow, certainly it doesn't seem to show a peaceable piece of thieving when the deceased was carrying a six foot scythe.

“However, this morning I caught the two men trying to steal my rooster. I demanded the rooster be returned but the victim responded by trying to hack me with a skythe so I defended myself with a machete,” said Jarat.

Never underestimate the power of the old farts.

We can defend ourselves and our families and never are afraid or run away.

Beware of the old dogs, they can bite really hard.

This lesson was brought to you by a young...ish old fart.

I am pretty sure the guy has had tough jobs all his life and is hard as nails unlike the two city boys that tried to steal his stuff. I'd by him a beer if I ever met him.

I would put a scythe in the thiefs hand too, can't prove he wasn't carrying it smile.png Good on the old fella but a good cut to the thigh would have been sufficient...

Sorry, but I have someone come at me with a scythe, I am not going to eff about trying to find a spot to just incapacitate said person.

Like I said, if he actually did have a scythe ? Pretty easy to stick one in his hand post mortem, makes self defense more plausible...

So why do you keep saying it when you have no idea about what the events were. Do you have something against someone protecting their property, not to mention their life?

To die over a frickin chicken.

A valuable fighting cock or ordinary chicken?

A fighting bird could be this poor guys most prized possession.

Anyway, a good idea sticking a large weapon in the dead thiefs hand.

I'm withy Carlos on this.

I can't see a chicken thief carrying a scythe to a coupe just to catch a chook. Makes it hard to scamper with the spoils under one arm and a long pole in the other.

Whereas, such an implement would most likely be a part of the farmer's toolshed.

After killing the kid for attempting a relatively minor crime (although the Thais really value their fighting cocks), it makes sense to make it appear to be self defense. He had plenty of time to set the scene.

(I too used to have a fighting cock, but now all I can muster is a pullet)

Perhaps the deceased picked up the nearby scythe when confronted by the farmer and his machete.

This is not about murder, mr. Cornish hen. I am sure the old man had not intended to murder someone.

Well he wasn't trying to give him a haircut...

I just can't believe some posters lack of basic human compassion, killed for a chicken ! Are we regressing to stone age times ?

Chopped off a hand would have been better.
