We both wear open faced helmets around town, good peripheral visibility and hearing, but now we want something for the faster open roads.

In addition to the extra jaw protection that a full faced helmet offers, we are both trying to keep the sun off our faces. My missus for obvious reasons and me cause I have big hooter and it gets burned, plus I would like to retain my beautiful soft complexion too.coffee1.gif

Years ago when we were building dune buggies we used to wear motorcross style helmets with a big peak to keep the falling mud out of our eyes and wondered if there is something like that available here. In white or silver.

..oh and I have deep pockets and short arms.

You could look for the ones that have the internal sun visor. Going with the motocross version and riding higher speeds means that every movement of your head results in the 'peak' catching the wind and placing stress on your neck. Not fun.

I don't know if they sell LS2 in Thailand, but it's a decent picture of what I'm talking about.

If you are on a budget have you considered a Real Helmet?

http://www.real-helmets.com

Not going to promise brilliance but they are a league above the Index ones you see around. If you can stretch into the B4,500+ range you can start looking at Shark and the like. Ask if you need more information. Would also help us if we know where you are so we can give you specifics (going to be easiest in Bangkok, etc).

Thanks. I thought they did but was too lazy to make sure so just typed in that disclaimer. Also, I don't particularly recommend that exact helmet, just saying it's in the style I was talking about.

Dave, do you wear a modular helmet, and if so what make and model.

Want to try one out with my next bike purchase.

Nope. I can't help but think the chin bar loses some structural integrity due to the two latching points. I use the Icon Airframe Ghost.

However, Mrs. dave_boo keeps telling me I need one because too many times I'll undo the straps and pop the helmet up on my head so I can smoke. She doesn't like that...and to be honest she's right. If I do get one, it would either be a Schuberth model (everyone says they are the best) or the Shoei Neotec. But I'll definitely want to try it on first...no ordering online from Revzilla for that.

I picked the modular helmet picture from google to illustrate my point because it was easy to see the visor.

Heard the Schu are good - will check out the Shoei too. Thanks

I bought my Ls2 from the Ninja shop. I like it. I dont know why u dont recommend it, is there something wrong? I have no much idea how to choose one. I also wanted to get one that can just lift the front part up but since as u say its less safe I wouldnt use it for a long trip and higher speeds but in Bangkok while waiting for traffic lights or when in soi riding slowly would be good. That s why I bought one cheap Rider and its really nice to have this option.

I believe the Shoei Neotec has been replaced by a newer model, the Multitec. It's the one I have. Not cheap, 20k baht mark but when you pick it up and put it on, you understand what you are paying for. Cut in recesses for intercom speakers, internal visor, pinlock, good ventilation. I've had mine now over 2 years and it still feels as snug a fit as the first day I bought it.

I can't recommend it as I don't have experience with it. I'm not saying it's bad, just that I am not going to recommend either way in regards to it.

The fact you wear a helmet (which may not be safer due to the flip up...or it could all be in my head) about town is better than not having one.

The Multitec is the older model. And apparently the Neotec has 276% more airflow than the Multitec. Thus my consideration of it. Although that doubt is still in the back of my mind.

I got it kind of thanks to u :). I didnt know about this shop GTauto for which u provided a link before answering a question about boxes/saddles. I saw it on their website and thought, I like the colour, I like the price I went to try it and ok for my city riding in the heat is ok. But can cool only the face part more. My hair seems more wet than when m I using the LS2.

If it has an internal visor, could it be in the up position and blocking air flow? But definitely riding with the chin bar up will impeded the intake vents.

Yes, you're right!! I got the two models confused. I have the Neotec, not the Multitec.

You're getting old and senile Jim.

Did you buy your Neotec in LoS or outside?

Yeah, will soon be riding only step throughs. Bought it on a trip to Malaysia - wasn't in stock in Paddock yet when I wanted it.

Ok, I was just hoping you found it in LoS since you have a big head like I do.

And forget step throughs...you need one of these:

No, it doesnt have internal visor. I dont ride it much with the chin bar up. mostly when i m stopped i lift it.

Than it's simply not as well designed as your other helmet.

This is the one I use, in white.

I like being able to flip it open @ stoplights for cooling and so others can see my hansom face.

Cost 4000.

Chinese.

YouTube reviews.

Do you notice a lack of airflow that nebula mentioned?

Thanks for those ideas, I would add a couple of things, I don't ride that fast on the highways max 80kph and I do sweat a lot so ventilation would be great.

Aren't the modular helmets heavy and are the internal visors opaque or could they be made so as almost everything transparent lets in UVA and some UVB too.

Someone mentioned in another thread wearing a balaclava, is that practical at all?

I assume that full face helmets are hotter anyway?

Posted (edited)

Fully closed, below ~100, air flow could be better.

I often ride with the visor up a little, then okay.

Feels substantial, but I haven't tested it by smashing my head into something.

[Except a bird and some big bugs]

Ninja in BKK ships quickly.

Inner visar is dark, not opaque.

[please see definition of opaque]

They are heavier due to the support mechanism inside.

Balaclavas work great. I use a Cortech that wicks the sweat away. It also makes sliding a helmet on and off easy.

I don't know about the level of heat above an open face helmet as I have only ever used full face, but you can let a lot of air in just flipping up the visor.

I was going to recommend Real Helmets for those who don't want to spend too much.

They are DOT certified, which you won't get anywhere else at their price point.

They also sell the inside lining, so if you wish to replace it after a year or two, it's cheap and easy.

When I go touring I put on a balaclava under my fullface helmet, then sunglasses.

When putting about, I put on a facemask, sunglasses and my open-face helmet.

Keeps me face as soft as a baby's backside.

My open face has a pull down visor and I never use it.

I always have sunglasses on in the daytime, and those cheap 100b plastic glasses on in the evening time (for bugs, dust, whatever). I always ride with my visor up for more airflow and better vision.

I also use a facemask, and then use a balaclava when using my fullface. I find it quite practical as it is better then a red triangle on your face for the next few days, along with bugs and crap hitting your dial at 120kph.
