I've booked two separate tickets to Bkk with Emirates and then separately to Chiang Mai with BKK Airways? Usually both airlines always transfer my baggage even though I don't have one through ticket (my understanding is that they are not obliged to).

However this time I arrive just after midnight and my next flight isn't till 10am. Just wondering would they still transfer the bags or is the transit time too long?

Thanks

If it is not booked under the same itinerary and PNR, I doubt the luggage can be checked through to your final destination, even though the two airlines work together and have codeshare agreements. But on the other hand, as you say you have almost 10 hours transit in BKK, why is it such a big problem to collect your luggage and then check it in again at BKK Air counters ?

Which is what I'd do, if only for peace of mind!

After all, if there was a problem, can you imagine the 2 airlines arguing over responsibility?

If you do it yourself, you'll know the status...and a further benefit......... you can clear Customs and Immigration at BKK, then check in to a domestic flight to CM, thus using up some of the 10 hours and saving time at CM.

It's practically unheard of for major airlines not to interline baggage irrespective of single or multiple reservations. Any check-in agent refusing to do so is lacking in training / competence.

I would not consider Bangkok Air a "major Airline" as they only operate intra-Asian and are not part of any Alliance. Emirates isn't an Alliance member either.

The OP did two seperate bookings and has two seperate PNR, so why take the risk if he/she has plenty of time to check-in the luggage domestically after arrival at BKK

Perhaps the use of "major airline" is confusing, a better choice would be "scheduled airline" as opposed to a LCC. Just pointing out to others that through checking of baggage to a final destination is the norm. Whether you choose to take advantage of it or not is a personal choice.

thanks for all the replies. I don't want to take to the hotel as quite a bit of luggage even in a taxi with my wife and kids as hassle. I think the best option is to put most if the luggage in the airport baggage room and take one to the hotel.

Siam by the way I've never had any problems with either emirates, thai or bangkok airways for transferring luggage even though tickets were bought separately which is great.

BA on the other hand point blank refused even though my wife was travelling alone with two kids. had a couple if bad experiences with them - never again. Emirates, BKK Airways, Thai, Etihad are a breath of fresh air compared to BA. just flew Virgin back to UK and they seem to have gone downhill drastically from when I flew them about 15 years ago to the states. The in flight entertainment was poor and needed re booting four times! very limited selection compared to Emirates too! A shame as they used to be one of the most innovative now seriously lagging. Was quite pleased with recent long ha thai airways flight too after reading all the negativity on tv.

I did this last month both ways.

Bangkok Air Phuket-BKK

Emirates BKK-Sydney

No problem with two separate tickets and we cleared immigration in Bangkok.

Emirates Sydney - BKK

Bangkok Air BKK-Phuket.

The transfer was 14 hours (not first connection as we wanted a good night sleep) and the luggage was interlined to Phuket without any problem on two separate tickets.

When arriving at Suvarnabhumi we cleared immigration and stayed the night at the airport Novotel hotel.

Next day we took the Bangkok Air flight to Phuket and collected our luggage from the international arrival hall.
