These snakes can squeeze into really tiny cracks and love the stairs, also very very quick to get away. About Pit Vipers I get lots of them in and around my garden, usually pretty placid but you do occassionally get one with small snake syndrome!

I had golden tree snakes (plural) like that in my house in Hua Hin, mainly in the kitchen. Mine seemed very docile and shy, but when they saw an escape route, they moved very fast, even straight up a wall. As mentioned, they're rear fanged so difficult to get any venom into you. Very pretty, I might add.

I will only beat something to death if it is trying to bite me to death.

My understanding is these Golden Tree snakes are rear-ended and venomous, though the venom us not dangerous to humans.

I see these guys around here all the time in the trees. Never saw one glide however. Would like to see that.

There are a lot of snakes around here, but probably not as many as there could be. In this rural area, many snakes, and especially cobra, are killed and eaten.

I've eaten rattlesnake before, but never cobra. Rattlesnake tastes like chicken.

the glide is very cool, i did no know they could and was chasing one off my balcony. it went steaming for the edge and glided an easy 3 meters forward and another 3 down to a tree beside the house. very graceful.

The picture looks more like a common water snake which are not poisonous. Spending most of their life around or near water sources, khlongs etc.

the only good snake is a dead snake, one with tread marks across the body :-)

When / if you kill a snake remember that even if you cut it in 2 pieces the head can still bite you up to one hour after.

not with a hilux sitting on it :-)

Thailand is called LOS, "Land of Snakes" and they sure do have them. Our dog is the best snake alarm a man could have, she alerts us whenever one is around, from Pythons to Rednecks. If they don't escape on their own I snag them with my snake catcher and drop them over the wall into the klong. With warmer weather here now you'll be seeing more activity from snakes of all kinds. When in doubt back off and observe their movement. I think usually they will get out of your sight because they know if they hang around too long some Thai guy will put them on the dinner table.

This is a useful resource for identifying snakes and also has information on venom.

Over 10 years of living in the Kingdom I have seen many snakes most are harmless, have been living in the same house for some Six years we are high in the jungle so we do get a number of snakes passing by , last month my wife had walked down the steps to be met by a young snake it was about 45/50 cm long and black in colour it reared its ugly head and instantly we were aware that it was a small cobra keeping still we let it go on its way what we did notice was on the back of the head / neck it had the shape of an eye and this was light in colour , we knew for sure that this was a monacle cobra had it bitten my wife I do not think we would have made it to the hospital in time as its a good hours drive we are now a lot more observant when walking down the steps onto the garden, it is also one of the reasons why we keep a number of cats as they are very good hunters and most of the time keep unwelcome guests away !!!

I haven't seen Malayan Pit Viper except on the Internet. But I am sure they are around. You might end up dead if you play with one: Fatal bite and quick (Malayan Pit Viper "Female"):

We spotted one at the bottom of the steps leading up to our Thai house - it is not around any longer!!

Who is "we"...and how would you know if it is not "around" if you are sitting at your computer ??

Golden tree snake, rear fanged, poisonous, not deadly to humans, but can lead to complications if bitten long enough....

I identified the snake as a Golden Tree Snake, too. I don't know much about snakes in Thailand, but this one I figured from pictures I had seen on the Internet. I tried not to bother him, but after a while he got paranoid and dropped the bird and took off.

well at least you didnt beat it to death then proclaim it would kill your children

some of us arnt experts like you on snakes,

so i for one would sooner kill a snake i didnt know anything about, sooner then let it get near my children,

do you have children by the way,?

It's not a grizzly bear. There is no snake you can't just walk away from. Teach your kids that. Your dog is another matter.

Tree snake. Non venemous. Dont worry about it. If it bites you, and it wont unless you grab it, get a tetanis shot. Snakes dont brush their teeth

I've seen planes and birds take off.....but never a snake

Actually, a Golden Tree Snake (which the snake in the photo is) is a species of "flying snake" they can glide from tree to tree/ground!

I know I am being picky, but seeing "poisonous" when referring to snakes annoys me a lot! (There is actually a poisonous snake though)

REMEMBER
If you bite it and you die - it is poisonous

If it bites you and you die - it is venomous

You are not being picky ,you are spot on. Next time a Red Necked keelback appears in my garden and someone says is it poisonous I will say " Bite it and see " I know if there is a snake close to my house ,my cat Samsee-the-viscious taps at the grass very carefully , lizards , geckos and skinks ( my wife calls them crocodiles ) are just prey but if no legs ....... take care Samsee.

They are quite agile, and I have had them jump almost over my shoulder into trees as I was photographing them on the ground. They can easily leap over a meter off the ground into a tree and perhaps as much as two. Also be aware that if agitated, they tend to bite multiple times as the shoes I have thrown at them can attest.

nah they all died from snakebite, you need to read up a bit on snakes then in my opinion.

Not very funny dude?

Killing Snakes shows lack of knowledge, and ignorance. Just leave them alone and they will leave you alone. maybe one day you are trying to kill a Snake, and it will kill you. They move quicker than you can blink.
