In the North, Pol Lt General Thanitsak Teerasawat, chief of Provincial Police Region 5, yesterday said two houses worth Bt10 million in Chiang Mai province were temporarily impounded, as they were allegedly bought with illegal drug proceeds in separate drug cases. The two houses would be presented to the Office of Narcotics Control Board for further examination as seized assets.

Police linked the first house in Tambon Nong Faek in Saraphi district to the arrest of Ritthichai Natheerattanakulchai, 44, along with 28,100 'yaba' pills. The other house in Tambon Ton Pao in San Kamphaeng district was linked to the arrest of Worapoj Assawapulsab and Kittikanya Na Chiang Mai along with 48,000 pills.

That is enough speed taken off the streets to cause a shortage, albeit temporary. The shortage will lead to a price increase at street and dealer level. That will mean more profits to be made which will incentivise more new people to try their hand at dealing and encourage established dealers to up their game. The war on drugs is futile and punitive in all countries. The post WW2 industrial mega growth and productivity in the USA and Europe in the 50s and early 60s can be attributed to the widespread use of amphetamines and the wide spread growth of the City of London and its associated financial services was fed by cocaine use. The war on drugs is not just a punitive, expensive waste of time it actually overlooks the very important contribution many illegal drugs good make for the good of society. Legalisation, taxation and education is the way to go.
