No power outage despite gas fields maintenance, says energy official

UBON RATCHATHANI, 6 April 2015 (NNT) – A power outage is unlikely to occur at Ubon Ratchathani province due to the gas fields maintenance in Myanmar during April, according to a provincial energy official.

According to the Ubon Ratchathani provincial energy official Chamnan Kayprasit, the temporary suspension of natural gas supply from Myanmar due to the maintenance of the three gas fields will not affect the electricity generating capacity to the point of a power outage.

The maintenance of the three gas fields in Myanmar, namely the Yadana, Yetagun, and Zawtika gas field, is a part of the scheduled annual maintenance. It will reduce the supply of natural gas to Thailand by 1.53 billion cubic feet, or by 25 percent of the total supply.

The Ubon Ratchathani provincial energy official has said that in response to this situation, the Ministry of Energy has ordered the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) and the PTT Public Company Limited to refrain from any maintenance operations of their electricity and the gas manufacturing facilities during the time. Both EGAT and PTT have also been ordered to prepare fuel reserves in an attempt to prevent any major effects to the overall electricity generation capacity.

He has also said that the energy consumption rate in April is expected to increase due to the high temperature, while the supply of energy is limited due to the gas fields maintenance.

The public has been asked to help conserve energy through efficient use that includes cleaning their air conditioners, adjust the air conditioner temperature to 25 degree celsius, pull off unused power cords, turn off unused light bulbs, and to change the existing light bulb for an energy saving one. The public are also advised to fine tune their vehicle engines before embarking on a long trip.
