Two very interesting comments on the above article.

Explains a lot of bashing going on around here.

The human race is nowhere near advanced enough emotionally or otherwise to deal with another species. We can't even effectively deal with our OWN species without wanting to kill one another. The very first thing we will want from an advanced alien species is advanced weaponry so we can continue to carry out acts of aggression on our own species. Later, we would turn those weapons on those who gave them to us. Humans are still very much in infancy. I would hope that advanced species would not want any contact with us until we evolve into a more tolerant and mature species. Right now we are the same as a 9 year child given a loaded gun and told to go out and play.

I see your point but things would probably change quite a bit if we really did contact another civilization. I don't harbor much hostility toward other species on earth. It could be that we have an evolved hostility toward our own species as a way of protecting our limited resources. I agree that advanced weapons are a problem, but only if we find a civilization that is just barely more advanced than us. Obviously a less advanced civ would not have anything that would greatly endanger us. A hyper advanced civilization's technology would be kind of like giving a fighter jet to your dog. In theory it could be very dangerous but in reality the dog would not be able to use it even if he really really wanted to bomb the cat down the street.
