Talad Thai: A model market which is free from illegal foreign migrant workers

BANGKOK: -- Talad Thai in Pathum Thani is the biggest market of farm products. The market has been hailed as the only market which is free from illegal foreign migrant workers as all about 5,000 foreign migrants working there have been properly registered.

Of all the foreign migrant workers working there, Myanmar workers form the largest group representing 48 percent followed by Cambodians’ 41 percent and the rest are Laotians.

In Pathum Thani alone, there are 42,555 Cambodian migrant workers, 18,933 Myanmar workers and 9,504 Laotians. All of them have been properly registered. But the real number of foreign migrant workers working in the province which boasts many factories is believed to be higher.

Pathumthani governor Pongsathorn Satjapongpun said that with all the equipments and system in place, foreign migrant workers would be protected and the problem of human trafficking and prostitution among the workers would be kept under control.

Mrs Chommanak Pancha, a trader at Talad Thai, said that illegal foreign migrant workers had disappeared from the market since the military launched a crackdown in the market.

Thai employers, she said, are now reluctant to hire the illegal workers for fear of punishment from the law.

I don't believe a word of it... I've been there, and loved it. I could care less if the workers were legal or illegal. What you do tend to notice (everywhere in Thailand) is that the foreign workers, work a lot harder than the Thais. They have to...

So no Thai's working there? Actually How many hard working Thai's have anyone seen? I can honestly say I have seen three maybe and honest Thai's the jury is still out on that one. But all that aside I still love living here Now I know the rules Trust no, one believe no one, and watch for falling farangs.

"the problem of human trafficking and prostitution among the workers would be kept under control."

Not eliminated but only under control. This implies that there will be human trafficking and prostitution but kept within certain boundaries!

It's like saying you have a drug problem under control but it still exists.

"Thai employers, she said, are now reluctant to hire the illegal workers for fear of punishment from the law."

If there was no control I bet they would employ illegal workers to increase their profit.

The usual hypocrisy, we'll reluctantly obey the law when the spotlight's on us and when it's not we'll fill our boots.

Maybe a name change of the market would be in order, from Talad Thai to Talad Khmer or Talad Burma ? (as there are mostly Khmer and Burmese working there)

So what do you suggest, sewing up their sexual organs? In the real world, some things will never be eliminated, they can can only be minimised, or controlled if you prefer.
