Most optical shops should be able to order them made through BKK.

Got a pair for the mother-in-law ... 18,000 baht for no-line bifocal, progressive tint and custom frame.

7-10 day wait.

I was expecting them to cost 8-10k, but I guess someone has to pick up the costs of all those shops with only three other customers for the week.

The soi past the SCB corner of Rajiviti, T/L about 20 yards down on the right is a very small shop that comes highly recommended (I won't say who by, but a highly respected opthalmologist). You wouldn't even know it was there if no one told you about it, but they're good.

Unfortunately their English (except for the main player) isn't great, but they know what they're doing.

You can get lenses there for 28,000 baht or you can try a pair of Hoya progressive's with tint for 4,000 baht like I did and I'm well pleased.

Have a look in if you're around there, nothing to lose.

It's only open 1700-1900 Mon Fri and Sat mornings 9-12......just walk in.

The owner works in a hospital, she can tell you where.

**I took my own frames

Zenni optical,

Order online, pay in USD with DC/CC, delivered from Singapore by EMS within 14 days, no tax

I paid $115 inc. for the most expensive progressive they had, with 3x clip on Polaroids.

But you do need to know your prescription and your frame size.

Similar glasses for me were $200 from Vision Center in Chiang Mai, no clip on sunglasses and don't fit as well

Agree Zenni is a good choice for obtaining glasses at a reasonable price (Thailand in general is not reasonable). But my orders were always shipped from China rather than Singapore - but at any rate very good and fast service.

VERY IMPRESSIVE; web site looks good with detailed instructions.

AND THEN? Bring glasses + frame to any optometrist who will not be offended to do the least profitable part of the whole endeavor?

I don't really understand this post?

Just look at the web site and ask yourself what steps to follow after that

After you order,

They arrive in the post and you put them on.

Yes this is normally for glasses and frames together - I never have had frames remain in that good a condition; even when paying hundreds for them, to justify using again.

Went there on a recommendation. Measurement for lenses was difficult because her equipment could not measure wide eye spacing. So she guessed and it was way off, lenses unusable.

I got my progressives from the optical centre close to the U.N. Irish pub. They did a good eye exam and 2 years on they are still good. I have had a couple in the fashionable shops on the lower floor of airport plaza. They were rubbish and a waste of money.

I get glasses with progressive & photochromic lenses in Pattaya at Euro Optic. The last time, since I was not in a rush, the optometrist asked if I would rather get the lenses done in Germany. So I thought that sounded good. Big mistake. Like viewing the world through a warped fish bowl. Took them back and had the lenses replaced with ones produced in Bangkok as I had always done previously. Excellent and using them for more than two years. Imported isn't necessarily better.

Tried them on the recommendation of probably the same opthomologist. Prices kept going higher and higher as she spoke and then wanted 3 - 5 days to process the order and wanted the glasses off my face. She preferred to talk with my Thai partner rather than me as well. No, I didn't buy a thing.

Zenni optical unless you want to pay the earth. Go into almost any reputable optometrist and they will do a prescription for free, obviously they hope you will buy your glasses from them but there is no obligation. Specifically ask for the distance between your eyes, or it is in fact easy to measure yourself. Do not get your eyes tested at those shops that just have a machine outside that tests your eyes in half a minute. Be prepared to pay way under half for the same thing in Thailand and faultless quality. American company in China.

It's easy to measure PD at home (but not by yourself).

Put on your old glasses, look straight ahead, get someone to stand in front of you and dot the center of each pupil with a felt pen.

Take off old glasses, measure between dots.

That' how the optometrist does it, no equipment needed except for a ruler and felt pen.
