Public hearing held on the Energy Ministry’s PDP



BANGKOK: -- The Energy Ministry held a public hearing today on its power development plan which will determine Thailand’s future electricity needs, electricity production and types of fuel used to generate electricity and the number of new power plants to be built until year 2036.

Power production plan will be based on economic growth rate estimated at 3.94 percent by the National Economic and Social Development Board, power conservation plan until the year 2036 which can help cut down the number of new power plants and projection of power consumption peaks.

Thailand’s current power production capacity is registered at 37,612 megawatts and this amount will increase to 70,410 in the next 21 years. Which means there will be more power plants which may include coal-fired, gas-fuelled, hydroelectric or nuclear power plants.

Mr Detrat Sukkamnerd, director of Health Policy Foundation, voiced concern of possible overproduction of electricity and this will cause unnecessary burden on the consumers.

Pointing out that by the year 2026, electricity reserves will be 39.3 percent compared to the standard of 15 percent, he asked whether the six power plants already committed to be built are still necessary.

He demanded that the Energy Ministry give full details of the electricity costs of nuclear and coal-fired power plants.

Meanwhile, Mr Supakit Nanthavorakarn, manager of the foundation, said that the public hearing was too limited because people in upcountry provinces who are also stakeholders were not given the chance to express their views on the PDP.
