We frequently send out things.

We must bring the envelope open to the post office, there it will be closed with a staple.

At the airport customs look inside, removes the staple and closes it with a tape.

Really true? Reason one shipment with value of something like 200 USD came empty to the customer, only closed with a staple which didn't hold (of course) and the product fall out of it somewhere.

But that "only close with a staple" sounds strange.

Anyone know?

Why "must" it be brought open to the post office? and if you know this is what happens, why not ensure its sealed it with tape.

Sorry dont understand OP.

It must be brought open to the post office, because they want to look inside.

If we seal it with tape it will be cut open at the post office.

I want to know if that is standard in Thailand (to prevent shipping of narcotics, viagra, steroids, pirated games, etc etc) or if our post office is simply crazy. My staff told me that the other post office close to us is doing the same.

Never had the post check any of my stuff that i send out of the country. I have even send viagra (to a friend) and ciggies (to my mom when she still smoked).

Never had the local post office ever check my stuff.

Never ever had any questions or looking inside a sealed item.

The only aspect that I can think of that might warrant such an action is what you state on the green customs declaration form is in the parcel.

You havnt stated what category of product you are sending and that may be very relevant.

All the products are declared as "hydraulic seals" or "Orings" on the green customs declaration form and go mostly to USA.

so nothing special. So it might be just our post office. What is interesting is that the second post office in our area wants the same.....

Long time ago or recently?

It started not too long ago, I think with the old government but I'm not sure...

Cant see any reason at all why they would want to look at "seals".

I have never experienced this ever, so cant understand why they are doing it for this kind of item.

I would suggest someone is taking a regulation or directive and misinterpreting it.

I would try another office and see what happens, make sure the envelope is completely sealed with tape when you arrive.

Why dont you write and ask ? go here:

Will try another office....

First it seemed reasonable.....I could send narcotics and write on the label "seals". But with the closing issue I have doubts now.

Didn't wrote an email because I didn't expect any answer....

Are you sending them small packet? If so they used to just tie it up with string

air bubble envelopes.....small everything, below 500 gram

Only items sent small parcels "patsadoo yoiee" need to be stapled and the PO rarely check. Items of value can be sent regular airmail sellotaped or boxed as usual. You can add signed for to any parcel for about 65 baht.

Are you sure that you are in Thailand ? Only Vietnam and Laos check parcels before closing them.

We send hundreds of parcels monthly at different locations.

Nothing has to be stapled and nothing is checked, this is pure BS, Thai customs do not check parcels.

Only liquid and batteries are checked in Xray machine and forbidden (parcels return to senders).

Where is your area ?

What do you mean "only items sent small parcels....." So you are saying it is normal that they need to be stapled?

While the others say no.....

I am confused...

Since you ship so much and seem to know what you are doing more than I do....

How would you mail a 1 kg flat package to the USA and Europe , its not breakable so can go in an envelope or just cardboard over it ,

Right now we are shipping Small Packet SAL but may start mailing it Small Packet Air if it will get there quicker and safer,

or am I missing something and there is a better way ?

thanks for your ideas

I have considerable experience.

There are different types of budget airmail offered by the PO.

1. International small parcels. Here you turn up at the PO with the envelope stapled closed. You attach a small green sticker (CN22) which is a customs declaration. Once upon a time you had to turn up with the envelope open for scrutiny but that hasn't happened for many years. The usual limit is 2kg per parcel but this varies.

2. Standard airmail. SAL. This is just like at home. You can wrap it up any way you want with sellotape. Goes up to 20kg or so.

Small parcels service is cheap.

Whichever you choose, you might be advised to get it registered post, costs 65 baht, this might enable limited tracking depending on the country, and acts as insurance.

Not BS at all !!! Obviously you are not sending international small parcels. You might want to check this out! As currently you are possibly paying over the odds for postage.

This may be a wrong thread, however....here we go.

I would like to send my valise empty, weighs 4.1 kg or with our winter clothes in it (weight about 7 kg) from Chiang Mai to Ho Chi Minh. (We have 1 1/2 months in Southern Thailand/Northern Vietnam between Chiang Mai and Ho Chi Minh, and would not like to drag that along. Yet, we will need a valise when we fly back to Canada from Ho Chi Minh and obviously, we will need our winter clothes when we arrive in Canada. Could this plan work? Do you see problems (such as Vietnam customs) and would you have an idea of cost?
