PHUKET: -- At least one body as been found in a camp set up by people traffickers in Phang Nga that was abandoned after a raid by police and officials in September last year.

Today (May 5) Phang Nga Governor Prayoon Rattanasaenee, city officials and police investigated the area of the abandoned Rohingya camp in Koh Toh Kra in Takuapa District, after the government ordered that all areas known for human trafficking are to be checked for corpses.

One complete human skeleton was found, believed to be that of a woman about 1.5 metres tall, who was buried according to Muslim tradition. Officials believe she was most likely a Rohingya, possibly taken to the area to be trafficked.

They also think she may have been pregnant at the time of her death.

Many other human bones were discovered as officials excavated the area, and more were found three kilometres away from the first site, among the mangroves of Koh Nok.

Thai Rat newspaper reports that in September last year a 13-year-old boy rescued from the Koh Toh Kra camp said that the Rohingya had been beaten by Thai people and at least 10 had been killed and buried at the site.

This first sentence is pretty disturbing even knowing how crooked local officials can be.

I guess these officials thought it best to have a "wait and see" attitude before investigating to boys claims.

Did a google search couldnt seem to find this story from September last year.

Why would they go back and look now after all this time with,what seems, no publicity about it? Did the head honchos in Bangkok drop the hammer on these local administrations to get their house in order?

What is also very worrying is that all these trafficking camps operated with the full knowledge of the local villagers.

No-one can claim that the local villagers were not aware of these camps, located just hundreds of metres from their homes.

How many people (Thai, Myanmar and Malaysian) have blood on their hands from this despicable trade?

shades of Kosovo!

Just imagine the outcry of Thais even in the last remote village in close proximity of those death camps, if this would have happen to a handful of Thai berry pickers in northern Europe...

And it's just the tip of the iceberg I think...and yet more shame on the police and officials for taking back handers and letting it go on. Oh and the tourism industry.
