Medical Insurance For The Digital Nomad

Featured Replies

Hello,

I hardly go back to my own country anymore and been traveling around the world for quite some time, doing online work when I need some money

I been pretty lucky I have not got into any situations cause I dont have medical insurance.

I want to get medical insurance for any issues that might pop up, need prescription drugs, dental work etc

I was curious if people could give me some advice on companies that are high quality, trustworthy etc that wll

not only cover me in Thailand but also other countries I visit because I do not stay in Thailand or any country full time

Thanks

I have no insurance at all.

If you are healthy it is like lottery...with only dental work and some usual small problems you are cheaper.

If the truck hits you or you get cancer you are doomed.....

that is kind of stating the obvious, I was looking for medical insurance options.. i rather not play the lottery in case something does happen

What you need is medical insurance to cover major events, not outpatient treatments, prescriptions drugs or dental work. For example, my husband and I have insurance thru Healthcare International. Another similar company is AllianzWorldWide. Also BUPA. What you're looking for is a policy with a fairly high deductible but a high cover and global cover. Well, our policy covers us everywhere except the U.S.!

A simple Google search will yield results. It's best to start a policy when you're young and healthy and keep it going because if you wait until you "need" it, then you'll find that pre-existing conditions aren't covered.

As said most insurance available will not cover dental or drugs (or even surgery if not done as inpatient). To cover additional items would likely not be affordable even if available without government/company picking up a major portion of the tab. Understand these can be major expenses for some people but most will self insure or if in a country actually providing such care remain there. But as said and you have stated - get what you can now when it is available to you.

Cigna International, AllianzWorldwide....there are many options, Suggest you contact an insurance broker to provide you with details and options so you can make an informed choice. there are many policies that will cover you worldwide except US.

It is usually not worthwhile to include OPOD cover as it increases the premiums dramatically. Only exception would be if some of the countries you spend time in are ones where OPD care is very expensive.

Inpatient only policies will almost always cover day surgeries, and often also cover procedures such as endoscopy. But for simple outpatient doctor visits and meds, that would be excluded.

If you are a USA citizen, in general, your coverage needs to be Obama care compliant. There are exceptions, especially if living outside of the USA and you qualify for the exemption. In that case, you can consider looking at other plans mentioned by other posters. Of course you can purchase those plans anyway, regardless of your Obamacare status. But you would still be liable for the current penalties for not having Obamacare.

I carry Careington dental which is a discount dental plan. I have had it for years. $85 USD year and it has been a great deal here in the USA.
