One of the lifeguard stations at Kata Beach.

PHUKET: -- The island’s beach lifeguards finally went back on duty at 13 beaches around the island today (May 20) after Phuket Life Guard Service Co Ltd (PLGS) signed a contract with the Phuket Provincial Administration Organisation (OrBorJor) on Friday (May 15). The OrBorJor pays for the service.

PLGS consultant Prathaiyut Chuayuan told The Phuket News today (May 20), “After I signed the contract, we put the three managers and 92 lifeguards through a refresher course in lifesaving and the rules.

“Everyone has to follow the rules such as no drinking alcohol, no fighting with tourists or other people while on duty, no ignoring people in trouble in the sea, or always do your job well.

“If they break the rules they will be examined by the committee and either warned or punished. Plus, if anyone of them use drugs, they will be fired immediately.

“We have two lifeguards on Yanui Beach, six at Naiharn, five at Kata Noi, seven on Kata Beach, 15 on Karon Beach, 17 on Patong Beach, seven on Kamala Beach, two at Leam Sing, six on Surin Beach, 11 on Bangtao Beach, six on Naithon Beach, six on Naiyang Beach and five at Mai Khao.

“The number at each beach will be adjusted depending on tourist numbers. During the low season we will have 13 jetskis for rescuing tourists during the low season. But for now we have two at Kata and three at Karon.”

So ... they have to be disciplined in advance not to fight with tourists and not to ignore people in trouble... Mmmmm, maybe a communication problem here.

Just in time for low season!

...if you open beaches to the public...that come her and spend fortunes...the beaches should be manned/policed....

...to say or do otherwise is detached from reality.....

Just in time for low season!

cheesy.gif Geez, here we go again. Another genius who knows nothing about the water here.

Look, Alwyn, high season the water is glass in Phuket, The surf you get would be the same as if you farted in your bathtub. Low season, the monsoons have changed, we've already had a couple Thai drownings in the last couple weeks.

I dunno, maybe all these people out there think the lifeguards are only for protecting the tourists when they make a post like this?

the surf won't kill you, but the RIP CURRENTS will ... see below, it can save yore life.

don't count too much on the lifeguards.

It's the surf that will create the rips by eroding the bottom, so although some decent info there you're not exactly spot on 149er. Also, the rips can be helpful for experienced water people as they will create a channel through the surf that can get you out faster.
