Wanted to take my Thai family to Angkor wat for a couple nights but now I learn they all have to have passports,even the children?If they just go one day they just need their ID cards?

That is correct. They need passports and will get a 14 day visa exempt entry.

The one day crossing is also limited to the border areas.
