Suvarnabhumi Airport restricts use of plastics & styrofoam on safety concerns

BANGKOK, 29 May 2015 (NNT) – Suvarnabhumi Airport has explained that its recent decision to ban airport staff from bringing plastic bags and styrofoam containers into its airside luggage-sorting area is based on safety concerns, a move that has generated controversy over social media.

Suvarnabhumi Airport General Manager Sirot Duangratana revealed that the ban on plastic bags and polystyrene containers was aimed at preventing risk due to foreign object debris in the aircraft. However, staff are still allowed to use reusable food containers, such as plastic or stainless steel lunchboxes.

The General Manager said the new rule was announced on May 18. However, staff working the night shift were temporarily exempt, given that many food outlets are closed. Now that the airport has allocated a budget for food shops to extend opening hours, all staff members regardless of their shift must comply with the new policy.

The airport is circulating an employee memo to notify all personnel and departments involved.

oh, i tought they learned that the styrofoam leeches it toxic chemicals into the food

I wonder if they know what a Glock 9 MM pistol is made off?

I guess this is as a result of the staff's natural ability to not throw rubbish in a bin

first they make a new rule,

after they implement it !

And later on they inform the employees !!

funny 3rd world procedure !

Wouldnt they have to inform employees before implemented ??

I wonder if they know what a Glock 9 MM pistol is made off?

I am sure the airport staff do not bring their polymer-based Glocks into the workplace.

If AOT who manage this airport consider this a safety issue, I hope they will spread these restrictions to all other Thai Airports they manage, including Don Mueang, but I suspect not !

I got a great Idea have a class say two week course on how dispose trash after eating I'm allowing for Thai learning curve. 1. after eating take trash put in trash can. 2. Tell AOT to put out trash cans in bright orange color to make easy to find. 3.Then have crew to empty said cans properly. Think that might work, NAH who m'I kidding?

This is a major, major step in trying to wean staff off plastic bags and styrofoam. Probably just one step away from causing a workers riot...also ban use of their cell phones in certain areas and they will surely riot at the airport.

whats so hard about making it a rule that eating is only permitted in the cafeteria? not on the runway!
