PHUKET: Police last night revealed their latest two arrests of local 'ya ba'(meth pills) dealers, two men who together were caught with 343 pills of the highly addictive drug.

Phuket police initially nabbed Mr Pariyet "Ton" Timan, 24, withb21 meth pills, described as flat and round shaped.

Ton's interogation led to the arrest of his alleged supplier, 21-year-old Mr Thammarat "Toom" Soomjai, who police caught with 320 orange, and two green meth pills.

Both have been charged with "illegal possession of a schedule 1 drug (methamphetamine), with intent to sell."

Despite sustained suppression of drugs in the kingdom, Thailand has been plagued by the meth trade since the 1980s, a societal epidemic that began about the same time that the US' Drug Enforcement Agency finally succeded in halting the domestic and international trade of Thai and Lao cannabis, which was one of the most lucrative trans-ocean smuggled commodities, illicate or otherwise, during the post Indochina geo-political conflict era of the 1960s and 1970s.

Today Thai peddlers can earn between B50 to B200 baht profit for each Ya Ba pill they move. The minimum wage in Thailand is B300 per day.
