Us & Them

Sadly I was subjected to two instances of "Racism" recently

1). I Called into one of the banks to enquire about savings account interest rates....they quoted me 2 percent

I asked what was the 2.4 percent on their brochure......their reply......thats for Thais....

I mentioned that I live here and will be paying Thai Baht into their bank not GBP......

You can guess the answer

2). Yesterday I went to a developers showroom thinking to buy a condo

And was told the price to Thais is (from) 1.88 m.......To Foreigners (from) 2.2 m

I told both of these concerns that if they went to do business in the UK they wouldn't be discriminated against...

Of course that went in one ear and out of the other

Oh well I guess we have to endure these things if we want to wake up to the sun shining every morning

Who the <deleted> would want to invest funds at 2 or (God forbid) 2,4 percent anyway - forget the alleged racism, think about the rational of the investment. You couldn't convince me to fart in bed for a 2 or 2.4% return.

As to buying a condo, get your Missus to buy it at the Thai price of 1.88M.

Keep your money in the homeland. All of it. If you bought a condo and decided to leave after a couple of years of more of the same treatment, I doubt selling it would gain your money back, never mind scratching out a profit.

having wife buy it would be counter intuitive as it would then not fall into the 49% foreign quota. thus narrowing the market for a resale

Really weird when it comes from somwhere like a bank. You may want to consider that type of attitude and the safety of your funds when it comes to depositing a large amount for a retirement visa.

2.4% interest is an average rate, you can get a fixed term where you pay no tax,but immigration dont recognise the account if using for retirement extension cos you cannot draw on it.

As far as buying a condo, its difficult to see capital appreciation cos most people want to buy new/off the plan rather than 2nd. hand....also over a number of years the building falls into disrepair unless you have a good management team.

If you buy high end,and i'm talking millions of baht worth, yes you can get capital appreciation.

Better to keep money back home and bring over when necessary, and rent here.

How many times do we have to tell you to keep the money offshore. The system is rigged against you here in every way. Like in a casino the longer you play you will see the odds in house favor over time.

Some people just dont get it or are too stubborn to learn from the mistakes of others!

What absolute nonsense! The US savings rate is currently between 0.15 and 0.6 percent the latter being a 72 month deposit certificate.

Wells Fargo's current CD rates are even lower: 1 year deposit (frozen) minimum $25,000, 0.15%

To the OP please do not get disconcerted by your experience. Please remember that all banks and businesess are controlled by the so called Thai elite. They are not just out to screw you but the rest of the population and have done so for a long long time. As a foreigner you may be disgruntled but please show some compassion for the millions of Thais, especially in the North and North East who have been abused and used by the Bangkok Elite for centuries.

Thai Visa monetary expert writes.....
that's "2 or 3 percent" more than the 0% i am getting in Dollars or EURos. NeverSure's "couple more percent interest" is therefore correct.

Probably 8ollox but I'll give you a chance....

- Which fixed term deposit gives tax free interest?

I have always had tax deducted and then claimed it back in January the following year.

- Which fixed term deposit is not recognised for retirement extension?

Ever since I had the retirement option my 800,000 has been in a term deposit, which is moved around on maturity to get the best rate. Immigration have never batted an eyelid in seven years.

I wouldn't want to keep more money in this country than I think I might need for the next month (an emergency event I mean). HK or Singapore would be a better bet, even if it means no interest.

I think experiences such as these are for the maladjusted. Ex-pats or locals. Ex-pats and locals. People not thinking about money and or sex all the time, will not have many of the experiences shared here on TV. They won't need them. They're normal, mature , comfortable with themselves, adults. All shapes. sizes, colors and countries. Moving nicely through life.

Aren't the Thais in the North and North-East the ones that votes for parties like Thai Ruk Thai?

Of course it is "us and them". They come from Thai culture and we're (I'm) western culture. we're different, we're supposed to be different.

Why would we be the same?

But it absolutely doesn't have to be "us versus them". Differing cultures offers a chance to learn different ways, different customs, people, art and music.

Cultural differences can be celebrated.

You can tell me as many times as you like.

I will continue to live my own life free of the nervous nellies, with my Thai wife in Thailand and elsewhere as I see fit..

I lost a damn site more in the west than I ever will in Thailand.

My money and I will do what I damn well like with it.

Did you ever see a tow bar on the back of a hearse?

Stop counting the dollars and start smelling the roses.

Sure it is just look how Thai government is treating foreigner citizens :

Land lease max a poorly 30 years.(why we cant own a one rai plot in our name?)

Business for foreigners we can only own 49% of our business in Thailand while we invest 100%.(Thai shareholders control ur business)

If we marry a Thai in Thailand then we remain an alien here..

If we marry a thai in Europe she becomes a European.

That how they serve u here ! Its THEM and us.
