PHUKET: -- The government has granted Phuket a B3-billion budget for safety and security management projects in an attempt to make the island a model province for sustainable tourism.

The announcement came at seminar held today (June 8) and attended by Pol Gen Pichit Kuandechakup and Pol Lt Gen Boonruang Polpanich of the National Legislative Assembly (NLA). Joining the generals were Phuket Governor Nisit Jansomwong; Deputy Secretary General of the Ministry of Tourism and Sport, Kajorn Weerajai; and about 1,000 representatives from Phuket business operators.

The seminar also saw the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Phuket province and national authorities on public safety and security standards for sustainable tourism.

Speaking at the seminar, Gov Nisit said, “The budget we have been allocated will be spread across many projects about safety and security.

“More CCTVs will be installed around the island using a budget of B285 million. We will also use some of the budget to build u-turn flyovers in Koh Kaew and Thalang, and flood protection systems in Patong, Phuket Town and Karon.”

He also stated that Klong Kata dam which will hold 4.3 million cubic meters to supply Chalong, Karon and Rawai will be ready for use on August 18 and that a budget of B60 million will be spent on a drainage system in Karon.

Gen Pichit said, “After studying all possibilities, we chose Phuket to be the model for other provinces for safety and security measures for sustainable tourism.

“We believe that Phuket is the province with the highest potential because of its popularity with tourists, its geography and existing management systems.

“We believe that safety and security are the keystones for sustainable tourism, and this is why we decided to sign an MoU on safety and security management.

“This MoU has been signed by 23 official units from around the island to ensure that tourists and their property will be safe, and that they will receive sincere hospitality from local people and businesses.

“We would also like to encourage businesses to create their own association to control what each of them does, and to create rules to create and maintain standards.”

Gov Nisit noted, “There is a consul meeting every three months and the next meeting is coming soon. I will update them about the MoU so they can spread the message of trust to people from their countries.”

The best way of improving tourist safety is, of course, not even considered, i.e. a decent public transport system to get them off dangerous motorbikes.

Also note no mention of an underpass at Chalong. Let's hope...................

What a warm stream of money. Now i know why they start to dig yesterday at the famous Patong City sign.........biggrin.png

The Phuket governor will be so pleased.......3 billion will go a long way to improving his lot....!

You can see all the smiles along the back row of that pic, as each member choices the colour of their new S-class.

The most important part of the budget. 'Transportation'. 2.9b.

Okay, there's 100m left. Should be plenty.

Yes, a Pattaya style Baht Bus system, would have an immediate effect on lowering the death and injury statistics on Phuket, not to mention, it would go a long way to luring back some of the lost western tourist market.

I think your being very mean. ??, mind you 3000,000,000 x 1000 business=

3,000,000 each or after the governor has taken his bit so about 35 baht.

Take the average 20-30% that disappears, that's a whopping 600-900 million baht into the void. Now we know why positions cost so much to get appointed/transferred here.

Someone will be smiling all the way to the Bank .... Does the stupidity never end ... blink.png
