Sony has just announced the a7r II, RX10 II and RX100 IV.

The a7r II has 42MP, which given Canon's 50MP, isn't that impressive by. However, it is interesting to note that Sony has released this latest sensor in their own cameras first instead of with another manufacturer.

More interesting is the other tech that is in the sensors:

  • The 42MP is the first full frame backside illuminated (BSI/Exmor R), which *should* give better high ISO performance (but maybe not too much).
  • It does have the 5-axis IS a la the a7II and no low pass filter.
  • It has an electronic front curtain shutter, "reduced vibration" mechanical shutter, AND a silent shooting mode, so no more sensor shake issues
  • It has 399 PDAF points on sensor; a7II and a6000 both had about 175.
  • For the RX cameras, the sensor has on-chip DRAM, which allows a 1/32000 sec. still shutter and 1000 fps video (I'm guessing at reduced resolution and for a very short duration). Hopefully, we will see this in the APS-C and FF sensors in a couple of years.
