Another crackdown on Pretties

I have gotten older. The girls on Loi Kroh road have gotten older and wider. 20 years ago there were many girlie bars at the night bazaar with cute young girls. They stayed open until midnight then we would go to Loi Kroh road that was loaded with even more young cute girls and they stayed open until the last customer left. Then we would go to the beer bar center where a lot of the girls that got off work also went. The party went on until the sun came up every night with plenty of eye candy to be seen all hours of the night. Can the same be said today?

'Personal services' have moved online and to social media.

The old ones that still hang on in the bars, like you, haven't learned to move with the times.

Get yourself a 'Line' or 'BeeTalk' account, and you will find all the eye candy you ever need, 24 hours a day.

And since nothing you do on-line can ever be fully deleted, you and others will have a permanent record of your adventures.

Why would anyone care?

Would anyone care? Well...

If you're old, probably not.

If you're middle-aged and pretending to be respectable, maybe. It's an extreme example, but if you don't already know the story and want a good laugh, Google the name "Anthony Weiner" and read about how Twitter idiocy ruined a political career and an attempted come-back. Some people never learn.

If you're young, very likely. Employers already check the internet for embarrassing information on job candidates, and I suspect prenuptial internet history checks are already done, and probably will become more common that prenuptial agreements.

So anyone who wants a responsible job or to marry into a respectable family should be careful.

Yeah, but we're all openly living in Thailand, and almost everyone in our home countries already thinks we are pedophiles.

Yes, many of us don't have to care about losing face in Farangistan anymore.

Thanks to absurd rumours over there we've already lost face in the West.

At least this holds true for me, but I don't think I'm the only one.

12,000 a month basic is the going rate. Bonuses and tips bring the better Pretties up to 30,000 a month.

I am writing an article and would like to quote these figures. Can you tell me where they came from?

I know more than one "Pretty," manager, including one who is legendary in the trade. The amount of money involved can be staggering. I was at two recent Thai promo events, and by fluke I was the only farang, or only farang table at the event. The second event, at a restaurant that just about every CM expat has never heard of generated 58,000 baht table money. The restaurant owner told me that the event grossed over 180,000 baht. I believe him, my table spent over 4,000 baht - and there were 80 tables there.

That was in a Thai restaurant that just about everyone here has never heard of - Derm Derm. If you would like more info PM me - I may be able to set you up with an interview with a Pretty team manager. I'll certainly pass on their contact details.

Derm Derm--there's one on Suthep past the main south gate to CMU, but it didn't strike me as a restaurant for expensive promotions.

I've been in that Derm-Derm. Some of the prettiest waitresses I have ever seen. Tiger promo, 3 for 200. One small detail: there was not a cold one in the house; I walked and haven't been back. They were doing a lot of volume, but I wouldn't call selling warm beer a "good business," under any circumstances.

People think you're paedophiles because you moved to Thailand?

You must know some odd people back home.

You'd be (perhaps not) surprised at the looks I got when I told friends, family, and colleagues that I was moving to Chiang Mai. One family friend came right out and said, "Why would you do that? That's all just a lot of drugs and prostitutes, isn't it?" Almost no one responded positively.

That's not on the same level as pedophilia, of course, but Thailand's reputation in many communities (I was going to say 'the international community' but I can't reasonably speak for that with any credibility) is not particularly flattering amongst people who aren't well traveled or well educated about travel, at least in my experience.

Someone told them there only children and ladyboys in Thailand, everyone goes there for sex, so they consider all expats perverts. Sorry to say so, but this is quite common belief in Germany

Not true, many think we're here for sex with adult women.

Regardless, there is a difference between suspicions and evidence in the form of on-line posts. Once again, this is especially applicable to young people. They may be in Thailand for a few months or years of debauchery worthwhile volunteer work, but then go back to their home countries and become bankers, lawyers, judges, politicians, the Pope, or something similar. Think of how career limiting a transcript of some hot chat sessions could be if they were uncovered. And if personal pictures that were exchanged during the chat came to light, the College of Cardinals might not be amused.

Of course for those who aspire to be nothing more than a bum or a reality TV star, go nuts! In fact, I think for truly successful reality stars embarrassing internet pictures and videos are a requirement.

I went with a group of student-friends a few years ago, all but one female. They were enamored with a handsome singer with the band. I only went there once, they went back several times over the next couple of months, then stopped. They found out the singer was gay.

I'm still in touch with most of these young friends and occasionally go out with them, but haven't been back to Derm Derm. I like a bar with a young crowd and many pretty ladies, but when I'm twice the age of the second oldest customer I feel a little out of place. Derm Derm was very much a student hang-out when I went there--I don't think anyone was out of their twenties.

Your powers of deduction are non existent in my case since I have not frequented the bars since they closed the bars at the night bazaar and built the Peak Entertainment center. However I do eat at Rock Me Burger which requires me to walk past the bars on Loi Kroh road.

If "personal services" were all I was after I would go online as you suggest but going online to find my entertainment is not what I was commenting on. The discussion was in regards to how fun Chiang Mai is today as opposed to 20 years ago and being able to hook up on Line and view eye candy over a small cell phone screen is not the same as being able to sit in the bar with a cold beer and watch hundreds of young cute girls trying to drag customers into their bar.

It really does baffle me that you can compare looking at or hooking up with girls on the internet with the ability to party from dusk till dawn with hundreds of girls.

just a update for the I can get three beers cheaper than you can,or this one has a better promotion than yours, blar blar bar is selling three large chang classic plus free bucket of ice for 100BTH.any one raise me on that one.

This promotion definitely wasn't there two weeks ago, and I don't think anyone is going to beat it. Did they put any qualifiers on it, such as a mid-week only promotion or must order before 8 pm?

Worth noting that Blar Blar has lots of pretty staff and beer girls on the weekends. They have a good supply on weekdays also, but not as many.

I agree that anything online is a useful addition at best to communication options, but not any kind of replacement for a good night out.

As fro good nights out though.. There was a short spell in the late 1990s or early naughties when girls would actually attempt to physically pull people inside. Not everyone appreciated that.

However there are more bars, and more girls in that area now than at any time in the past. New bars are opening up every month. Some bars are opening now in the night bazar building... although in the past that was a tough location; I bet it still is.

Spotlight has more and prettier staff than at any time in the past decade plus. I think we may have the Chinese to thank for that. The only difference I could see that in the past the Spotlight staff used to speak a lot better Thai than I. Yesterday I found that this is the other way around now.. Girl from Mae Hong Son.. yeah right. smile.png

As for how bar staff look.. As memories get a lot better over time and people's tastes do involve, many people try to tell us that it was better 10 years ago. Or more often: exactly the number of years since they first arrived, coincidentally. Yet any old photos that people are able to find or provide show that this really isn't the case. (And I love looking at old bar photos; if you have them, no matter what the girls in them look like, please post somewhere (not here) and let us know.)

Dusk till dawn.. in the last millennium you had a handful of bars on Loy Kroh and the bar beer center near Thapae Gate. When those closed there was... What.. Bubbles in the Porn Ping tower I suppose, and not much else. Or the old style local nightlife in the President Hotel and the like. Las Vegas.. LOL, what a sleazy dump. Let's keep it real as to what it was like XX years ago. ;)

10/12 years ago chiang mia at night, was virtually a ghost town, there was a bit of a beer garden at the back of were spicy is now and not much else.no wonder I not like cnx in them days.

Absolutely was it a ghost town.. I remember walking around the old town area in the evening on my first day in town and there was absolutely nothing. Ratchadamnoen, Ratwithi, Phrapokklao Rd.. Nothing. Right now there are lots of little shops, restaurants, cafes.. and then you hit the Zoe Yellow area.

(This was before realizing that the area in between the old town and the river had a lot more going on. But even now the old town area is relatively quiet, which is probably a good thing.)

Oh and I stayed in the Nimmanhaemin area. Which was also sleepy-town. There was a single 7-11 half way down, and the Rincome hotel.

You're on the right track, but try to find something drinkable. Leo is as low as I go, and not more than a month old. Blar. Blar does have the pretties, but I have my doubts about the cold ones, but you can take half your ice out and place the bottles in it. Can you smoke at BBB?

And to add about the ice in beer, Club Cafe is often empty during their AYCD promo, which has been as low as 115 THB. If they actually served cold beers, instead of slopping around warm pitchers; I think the promo would attract a lot of customers.

I only need 15 minutes with a girl, then it's time for my slippers and a cup of warm cocoa, and straight off to sleep.

It's for conversational emphasis, not grammarians! Seems to be an Aussie conversational trait, mainly.

I already stated exactly how my dusk to dawn partying went 20 years ago. I engaged in that activity from 1995 - 1998. I stopped then when I got married. After I got divorced I took another trip down to Loi Kroh road bars and it was nothing like it was before. Almost no girls and the ones that were there were in their 30's and overweight. The only place I saw a fair amount of girls was at the complex where the muay thai ring is and the numbers were pretty low compared to 95-98.

115 THB for all you can drink Heineken and the reason no one goes is because the food is bad? Nothing at all to do with flat and warm?

Club Cafe has all you can drink Tiger for 115 baht, and it's usually between warm and cold--it benefits from ice if you're not too much of a purist. I think the food's ok, but it's better and the portions are bigger at Blar Blar Bar. Blar Blar also does much better on the pretties, it has dozens while Club Cafe will only have a few on a good night. The biggest problem with Blar Blar is the beer selection--Chang and Chang Export.

Speak for yourself. I'm British, and I'd no sooner have warm beer than I would cold gravy.
