Thai/ French dual nationality allowed?

Featured Replies

I have read elsewhere Thailand does not allow dual nationality. Is this true? Thanks in advance

Lots of Thais living in other countries now that still have Thai citizenship also. Dual citizenship is not a problem as far as Thailand is concerned.

Don't know about France.

my understanding is Thailand doesn't recognise dual nationality legally speaking but turns a blind eye to it

so in terms of the OP, maybe good to answer it this way

Legally speaking its true, practically speaking its tolerated

France not sure, not 100% sure but think its not

The actual wording of the relevant and latest Thai nationality law, or at least the English translation of same, is a bit ambiguous on this point.

But Thailand does allow and recognise dual nationality.

Dual nationality has been legal in France since the early 70's.

The law make mention of those with another nationality, so in a very real sense, it recognises it. Though, like many countries it doesn't go out and say 'dual citizenship is okay'. It simply doesn't ban it...

Ok Thank you very much for these responses.

Dual nationality has been legal in France since the early 70's.

Just a sidenote: in Germany dual nationality was (in the past) not legal.

BUT there were always exceptions possible, e.g. for nationalities where leaving citizenship was either impossible or resulting in loss of property, assets or other hardships.

Thailand was one of these countries/nationalities.

I know a couple of German/Thai dual nationals.
