How stupid of the owner to have all his favorite Police Officers in memory on his phone. If they do not go to prison, they will come see you, I wpould bet !!

But, I feel what ever it takes to clean=up these type places that prey on young college students !!

I teach those young college students. I was once one of those young college students (in another country). Students do what they want. I agree that you punish the bar owners for breaking the rules. But these are not innocent and impressionable kids who would never ever think of drinking or doing drugs if that big bad pub weren't nearby.

Story time again...... I usually go to Sukhumvit Soi 3 for a Sheesha and an Arabic coffee once a week. This particular week i turned up and there's no Sheesha (Hubbly bubbly) and no other restaurant had one either. I asked the owner what was going on ? He explained that the Army came last night and stopped all sales of Sheesha, and that they would be back with an offer from above. The owner told me that he and most others were already paying 15,000 bht a month to the Police, and he thought that all would be ok, just he'll be paying a different bag boy soon in a different uniform....... Oh no, this is not the case, later on the Army came back and informed the owner that his business was now under new management (The Army) and that the price is now 40,000 bht a month ! This might explain why there's no sheesha in the Soi 3, the Arabic street in Bangkok......... Good old Army........... Not.........

Not one word whether the pub owner will be prosecuted for operating his establishment without proper license and beyond permitted hours.

Not one word whether the police officer who allegedly called the owner just before the raid took place will be thoroughly investigated and - if found to have warned the pub owner - dismissed from the police force.

Not one word whether the other police contacts found in the phone memory will be called in and grilled about their affiliation with the pub owner.

He added he would report the raid at this pub to the commissioner for action.

Well, see, that's the thing. There's no evidence that they were tipped off. There was a record of a cop calling the bar owner before the raid, but no record of what was said. Maybe he was confirming tee time for a golf game next week. Maybe they don't open extra hours and were just closing on time as is normal for them. No mention of whether the "drug tests" found any positives or not (the test used is notoriously unreliable anyway). Stories like this are just publicity stunts for the cops. I think their promotions are partly based on how many times they can crowd into a picture of some poor jamoke being arrested for mopery.

If the offenses are:

1) Operating without a license

2) Operating after hours

Why is a big raid required?

But just to reduce your level of confusion, let me explain.

I think the police should take action against bars that are unlicensed and operating after hours. And of course, go after bars that serve underage customers.

But why is a big raid necessary to do this. Isn't this just a waste of resources? This is typical grandstanding by the police. Do something big and flashy, call in the media, get some quotes and pictures in the paper.

A much more effective method to actually document law-breaking, and accumulate evidence, especially of things like underage drinking and drug sales, is to send in a couple of guys undercover for a few nights. As far as bar registration goes, send in two guys to check for registration when the business opens, and if the paper is not forthcoming, close the bar for the night.

And keep it up all year long, so your corrupt friend calling his bar friends wont make any difference.

This story has a 'first' in it (correct me if I'm wrong). I have never read a story where the police actually identified one of their own as being the person who 'tipped off' the subject of a raid. In this case, there are several policeman's names in the owner's phone (the RTP command cannot complain when these officers are removed from the force; no matter who their connections are). I think catching those crooked cops is better than closing pubs staying open late. The reform of the police has to come slowly so, possibly, part of this raid was a set-up to find out who the tipsters among the RTP are. Maybe they will get a few Eliot Ness 'untouchable' squads to go around setting up crooked cops. I know, wishful thinking. I can dream, can't I?

Another surprise is that the other four 'pubs' didn't get a 'tip off' and were caught being open past legal closing time and had underage customers (that is the focus of Prayut this week; college students' access to alcohol close to campus. Maybe the pub owners don't read TVF). I was under the impression that all the businesses that wanted to break the rules had to pay.

The special team of police force comprises Crime Suppression Division, anti-human trafficking and metropolitan police raided “Red Seed Pub” (they actually raided five 'pubs') on Buddha Monthon 1 road in Phasi Charoen district was led by assistant commissioner of the Royal Thai Police Pol Lt Gen Prawut Thavornsiri.

Notice they mixed different divisions within the RTP (to watch each other) and put RTP Lt. Gen Prawut 'on the spot' to prove he wasn't corrupt. In other words, they were forced to do their jobs properly. Maybe this is what it's going to take to cut down on the corruption within the RTP.

I can't imagine a more impossible job than reforming the RTP while keeping what law and order still exists. I think this is a case of "Slowly, slowly, catchee monkey".

It would have been more news if the pub had NOT been tipped off ahead of the raid by some police probably on their payroll, or perhaps the operators of the pub themselves.

But at least, the tip may have come from the Consumer Protection police... Well, doing their job, after all, looking out for the interests of consumers -- consumers of liquor and other substances...

Well...partly to find out what is actually going on while trying to assess just how much money is involved while trying to decide if it would be prudent to allow the establishments to continue operating after fining the establishments a legitimate fine ( for the record ) and ...........afterwards.....a understood arrangement to cooperate with the police...who now supersede the "other police"...who had a previous arrangement before the raid.

All the while the police look good in the public eye while cracking down on the most urgent of social matters demanding to be addressed by the police.

Police raids on bars in Thailand have been going on for years. A large number of police are required to process the number of people in the pub at the time.
