PHUKET: -- The recent "Mers" outbreak in South Korea is having no negative impact on the island̕s tourism industry according to the Vice President of the Phuket Tourism Association, Phurit Martwongsa.

Speaking to The Phuket News today (June 22), Mr Phurit said that the Mers outbreak is not having any affect on the countries tourism and that hotels and tourism businesses have reported that reservation rate are normal with zero cancellation.

“Although Thailand has reported one case of Mers this is not affecting our tourism industry because the patient is being monitored and is under the supervision of a doctor.

“In fact, I think the Mers outbreak in Korea will actually increase the number of tourists coming to Thailand and Phuket,” he said.

“However, I want to advise residents and tourists not to panic that the Mers virus will spread because our health officials have it under control.

“We have had previous experience with Sars and other viruses that we have managed to get under control. Controlling and preventing a Mers outbreak in Thailand won’t be a problem. Don’t worry,” he concluded.

If Koreans visit Thailand because they are avoiding MERS, I don't think you can really call that tourism. But by Thai logic, sure, whatever. Koreans are the right color so they are accepted here...that is until they keep beating the crap out of Thais in football. rolleyes.gif

Here's hoping the usual inane and anal comments generated by the usual anti-Thai trolls has no negative affect either.

And congrats to clockman for posting the first comment on the topic !
