Supreme Court declares US-wide right to same-sex marriage

As long as we are making predictions, my prediction is that the majority of gay men's promiscuous behavior will make "marriage" look like a farce within a few years. That is when the blowback will really start and that is why they should have called it something else. They have every right to have partners, but it is going to be something very different from how it has been traditionally between men and women.

The religious leaders you quoted comments from all talk about sacred unions between a man and a women and, which seems to be conveniently forgotten, "until death do us part."

With the US divorce rate presently over 50% don't you think your gays making a 'farce' of marriage angle is a bit of a stretch?

No I don't think gays making a 'farce' of marriage angle is a bit of a stretch. I lived in San Francisco for many years. Wait and see what they do to the divorce rate and with activities like swinging. Things are not good now, but it will get MUCH worse. There will be no comparison.

You do realize some countries have had legal gay marriage for a very long time now? It wasn't invented in the USA.

I have to admit this exchange between UG and I is kind of interesting.

That's because I think in his heart he really doesn't view himself as being bigoted against gay people, even though I think to most gay people those views would be perceived as bigoted.

So I can understand people being annoyed being labeled bigots when they really don't think they are in their hearts.

That doesn't settle anything, but to me it's still interesting.

Since over 50% of marriages in western countries end in divorce, sincerely doubt our gay friends could do much worse. Marriage has become largely a farce anyway. Same statistic holds true for 2nd marriages - or even slightly worse. Very happy for gay people today - equal rights for all of us

The different rates of divorce between different identities of people is actually totally irrelevant.

The idea is legal equality. Not equality of outcomes.

If South Pacific Islander descent Americans (randomly mentioned) were shown to have an unusually high rate of divorce, who would suggest that class of people should be excluded from having the same legal rights as all other fellow citizens?

I'm not saying if gay people have or will have a higher rate of divorce or not.

I am saying -- IT IS IRRELEVANT!

I still laugh at country singer Kinky Friedman's reply when asked about gay marriage (it's already been mentioned by someone in an earlier post):

"I support gay marriage. I believe they have a right to be as miserable as the rest of us."

It's an option only.

Not a requirement.

The way some straight people are freaking out, it's like they think Obama has just ordered them to marry their fishing buddy.

I do accept gay Americans as first class U.S. citizens. I marched for gay rights regularly. when I lived in San Francisco and Miami. I want gay people to have the same rights as I do, but I do not consider changing the definition of marriage to be a right. They should have the right to legal partnerships with the same rights as marriage, but it should be called something else, because it is something else when it is between two men, instead of a man and a woman. .

You did lose so that's good news.

Reminds me of what Jemaine from Flight of the Conchords said; "I'm happy gay people have finally got equality, and I'm happy Republicans are furious.".

Point of order;

Now that it is law, people should stop calling it "gay marriage". It's just marriage.

Some of the US is so far behind the rest of the world, it's pathetic. For the dominant economic force in the world to only now acknowledge this issue fully, is wonderfully pathetic.

I can understand that perception well but for people who really understand the way the U.S. system is designed to work on social issues (VERY SLOWLY!) they understand that in this case, by strictly relative U.S. standards, this came about VERY QUICKLY. It is frustrating but that's the way it is.

Black people are not especially promiscuous. Most gay men are. I have lots of gay friends and acquaintances and they don't try to hide it. Once they start getting married in droves, that will become an issue. I really like this take on the subject and the guy is left-wing journalist:

Gay men have always been insanely promiscuous. This has been a feature of gay male culture in the US for much of this century. There is nothing new about it. It exploded in the 1970’s as new opportunities arose for gay men to have many more partners than before

https://robertlindsay.wordpress.com/2013/11/20/gay-men-straight-men-and-promiscuity/

You might want to check your research. Gay men are not 'insanely' more promiscuous than straights. Most reasonably well done studies do show a higher rate of sexual activity, but it is reasonably close to straights.

I know a lot of gays who are extremely selective about sexual relations. The ones who are promiscuous skew the statistics.

But this isn't about promiscuity, it is about gay marriage. I suspect there is a difference between gays and their straight counterparts. A lot of women push for marriage due to the biological clock. I don't know if the same thing will happen with men. It will be interesting to see the average age of marriage once gay marriage has been around for awhile.

Now please stop with the inflammatory remarks.

Point taken and I agree. But Kinky's great line was made long before it was the law of the land.

One thing the right wingers are correct about. It isn't actually the law of the land. The laws in some states codifying discrimination against same sex couples marrying don't just instantly vanish. They are still technically on the books even though enforcing them has now become unconstitutional. Some areas of some right wing dominated states are resisting following this ruling. Of course all such resistance is doomed for failure but that phase of this is happening right now.

Ask Ted Cruz:

"The modern Democratic Party," he said, "has gotten so radical and so extreme in its devotion to mandatory gay marriage that they've decided there's no room for the religious liberty protected under the First Amendment."

I'm curious, did you support interracial marriage when the majority of states prohibited it?

Interracial marriage has nothing to do with gay marriage. It is between a man and a women as marriage has been since the beginning of time. Only a very small part of the world ever forbid marriage between different races, but pretty much everyone all over the world for thousands of years considered same sex marriage absurd.

I most Arab countries, it's illegal for a Muslim to marry a Jewish person. In Burma, it's illegal for a female to marry any man who is not Burmese. there are probably a slew of similar restrictions ww. On a side note: If a girl is raped in Ecuador, ....if the rapist then agrees to marry the victim, there are no legal charges.

Well, now that men can marry men, and women can marry women, what's next? Polygamy, group marriage, maybe even child marriage? After being married twice, I view marriage as some form of torture. Hopefully, these people will enjoy it as much as I did.

On the bright side, maybe this decision will make it easier for John Travolta to get a massage.

Actually, while the ruling might seem to allow same sex marriage, it only allows for recognition between states. As John Roberts rightly said, this is not a constitutional issue. And there will be more challenges to this ruling. Only Congress can make federal law, and none has been written. In this instance the Supreme Court is referee, not judge. It struck down, did not apply new law. It is not 'law of the land.'

As a side note calling someone else racist because they do not agree with you is hate speech. Nothing more.

I don't hate anyone but I don't have any homosexual friends if that is what you mean.

To those who think it's gross - to picture two men making love. How more gross is it, than a male and a female making love? Think about the mechanics of sexual arousal, and what one person (male or female) will do, carnally, to another. Isaac Newton was an anomaly, in the sense he never had sex with anyone. Are people like him weirdos, or are all the other people who will put odd smelling things in their mouths weirdos? ...things which have multitudes of hundreds of types of bacteria, yeast and fungi.

It's OK to think it's gross. I think Hagas is gross but I'm still open to marrying a Scottish dude.

This is a civil rights movement. Not a thought control movement.
