TUESDAY AFTERNOON UPDATE: Tycoon sought in brutal attack

Featured Replies

A real estate tycoon accused of launching a brutal attack on a well-known TV presenter at a Phnom Penh restaurant is reported to have fled Cambodia after leaked security camera footage of the incident began to circulate on the internet on Wednesday.

A warrant has been issued for local magnate Sok Bun to appear at Phnom Penh Municipal Court and police have confirmed they are seeking his arrest.

The video, taken shortly after 1am on July 2, shows Bun engage in a heated argument with the former Cambodian Television Network host Ek Socheata, better known as Ms Sasa, before dragging her to the floor and repeatedly punching and kicking her in the head.

Property tycoon Sok Bun has resigned as director of joint ventures between his company and Singaporean partner TEHO International, amid ongoing controversy over footage showing him viciously attacking a female TV host earlier this month.

In a statement dated July 10 and published on their website, TEHO International said Bun had “agreed to resign . . . due to personal reasons with immediate effect”.

Despite Bun’s resignation, it is unlikely TEHO International will cut ties with him altogether.

Sok Bun gives up 'oknha' title
Tue, 14 July 2015

Property magnate Sok Bun has announced he is giving up his honorific “oknha” title and pleaded not to be imprisoned, amid ongoing indignation over a video released last week showing him savagely beating a woman.

In a statement released through his lawyer Yin Sophy today, Bun also offered his victim, former TV host Ek Socheata, $100,000 in compensation. Socheata, better known as Ms Sasa, has previously said she rejected an earlier offer of $40,000 in compensation and wants Bun to face justice. In a separate statement, also made public today, Bun resigned as president of the Cambodian Valuers and Estate Agents Association, a real estate industry body.

The title of oknha is bestowed upon people who have made a significant contribution to development in Cambodia, and normally requires a $100,000 donation to the government.
